WangKon (EC)

We will keep to the round end on Saturday as planned. 6pm GMT time. All new comers are welcome to try their hands at this round. :)

@kossin
Spoiler :
0 whip anger? Nice tech path however, I like it. What's the first priority in a new city? Food -> focus on it.
In coastal cities, it's been shown Granary first is better than lighthouse if you whip (unless Organized or rush buying).
It was hard to see the intended capital move by pnp. Since Alex is so big, I'd try to be his friend.
By fiddling with your save, I improved bpt to 400 stable. Check trades/micro. (If you whipped more, you'd be over 500 already)
Thanks for your feedback and the clarifying regarding the southern island. Very good to know.
I'm still really bad at whipping. Every time i play I forget and then go on and do some sporadious whipping. Whipped a lot more in this game than I'm used to though. However, in the beginning of the save. When do you regularly say you quit whip?
Veeery interesting about the bpt, 400 stable ey? I gotta open the save again and do a little micro, just to see. Again, thank you for your feedback. This is, just plain good stuff.

@Glansmannen
Spoiler :
I stop whipping when I'm out of Slavery :) If you acquire The Kremlin, whipping is still a very good option. Otherwise, I'll stop whipping cities once all base infra is in (multipliers mostly) and when there are better options. Once Assembly Line is in and you have the full hammer multipliers, whipping is still good but so is pure production from workshops&co.
Don't be afraid to stack anger (in the short shadow of pnp's 1000->1100 AD I whipped the Palace for example and a few cities 3+ times). You don't want to whip mature cottages but cottages, hamlets (esp. non riverside), mines, farms, coast, low food tiles are all prime whipping candidates.
It does take some time getting used to it and you have to consider the cost:benefit ratio of course.

Probably the last save to post.

Spoiler :

I switched to alphabet for wealth. Then teched to optics for caravels. Took currency and col next and went straight for CS. Meanwhile found Alex, Isabella and JoaII/Pascal. Sent out 2 caravels. (I think I switched to CS. Need to check lol)

Built a city on dot island for extra trade from trade routes. Used wealth in capital and slow built courthouses.

Popped a great priest and settled in capital.

Moved towards Liberalism once I traded for aesth and teched lit. Also settled marble city for NE. Building unis at mo instead of wealth.

Paid alex to make peace with vicky after joining war. This backfired when Isabella took Vicky as a vassel. I then paid Alex to DOW Spain.

Techwise i should happily get liberalism. 9 turns off.

Spoiler :

Overall I didnt realise astronomy gambit was best way. If you run wealth in capital you can get science close to 360. Only mutal is near lib but not sure if astronomy, PP and lib could be teched for a SM lib grab. Pends how far off mutal is from edu/lib.

Once peace breaks out options will be open. i did get the cric navigation bonus and I have done all i can to make Alex pleased. happiness is an issue.

Looks like Astronomy first is a strong move. Probably should of whipped court houses.

Any more saves or do we close round early? I can always add the saves if people post in next 4 hours.

Just to compare i completed my own save to 1100ad. (This is a shadow)

Spoiler :

Got to 1 turn from liberalism but I dont have the caravel route done. I will get liberalism first and maybe trade with the other AI. I should get PP and democracy route first. trouble is I suspect Pascal hasbanking etc and someone has divine rights.

Techwise my capital is a poor site. The flood plain city would of made a much better bureaucracy city. I think also Pascal prolly got music first from doing PNP save.

Oh well it was a different approach probably not best approach.

Okay we will go ahead and vote up to Monday 6pm GMT. Its not about voting for the best save but the most interesting save going forward.

Remember you can't vote for your own save. Please vote for 3 saves and give reasons for your vote. 1st = 3pt. 2nd = 2pts. 3rd= 1pts.

Here are the saves.

Gumbolt

Glansmannen

CBPE

PNPdredd

Norvin Green

Lymond

As stated above we will close voting 6pm GMT Monday or when we have a clear winner. Lets get voting.

Lots of close saves. Here we go:

1) Glans: went Astro route
2) Gumbolt
3) Lymond

The saves other than Glans and I are all close. I didn't spend a lot of time checking, but I think that Gumbolt has around 390:science:/turn running full research, Lymond has around 380:science:/turn, and the rest are all around 350:science:/turn.

That's a pretty crude way to rank the saves, but that's what I've gone with.

It was not a round of much activity. i think other saves built more cities than me. It is quite close either way round. Glans may have gone astronomy but many will get this through liberalism. if Glans can still get lib too then thats a strong save.

hey pnp - how do you calculate your bpt numbers for the saves?

This seemed to be a tougher round to measure and a lot of the saves were close. I could switch my top 3 easily with not much difference. I guess the difference with Gumbolt's is that his is more decisive

Gumbolt - 11 cities. Lib in the bag. Not sure why the north rice/clam not settle but I guess more focus on research. Saewon's in the works. Would Slavery be better still at this point to whip out Unis and deal with the unhappiness? Good save. Scouting so-so (1st Place)

Glansmannen - Astro in. Seems a little behind in tech but with Astro research is strong now. Looks like some resource/tech trades are in order. This could be a really strong save if Lib race is won, which seems possible. Not sure about Lighthouse builds in some cities -workboat/granary seems stronger to me. No marble city or NE (3rd Place)

CBPE - 11 cities. Appears to have lost Lib. However, Pacal may not prioritize it. Edu in and Saewon's in process. No marble city. Good exploring (2nd Place)

PNPdredd - Astro in and beakers strong, but tech seems behind at this point. Could construction be traded for and bee-line Edu-Lib better? Good Exploring. Marble city up. Question Market builds at this point - seems focused research/wealth builds in order. Religions seeping in nicely. Could switch to OR soon. Seems like lost focus here but then I just may not be following the logic.

Norvin Green - 11 cities. Good exploring. Edu in but can't quite make out the tech situation. Looks like a lot of tech trades haven't happened. Lib looks possible with the right moves, but maybe not.

The actual choice of save could be based on how strong the AI is. Especially with pascal tech wise and Alex military wise if not somewhat backwards.

Shadow round to 1100AD:
Spoiler :

I played from my own 400 AD save - didn't see how different it was from pnp's....only big difference I remembered was that I had gotten the AP, so I spent the first part of the round getting the religious buildings up for a nice hammer boost. Grabbed Currency then went to Optics. At this point I should have gone Astro for big trade routes and ability to trade for resources which would have gotten me to close to the same point techwise. But I quickly met the neighbors and was concerned about getting lib so I started down that route.

Moved capital to Paris just before switching to Bureau since it was much better suited for commerce. Original capital was not ideal (what moron decided to settle on the banana!!).

At 1100AD, I just finished printing press for a nice boost to the economy. I have a comfortable lead on Liberalism. Plan is to go Philo>Nat>Constitution and take democracy from Liberalism. I've started doing this more lately. In games where I'm not planning to leverage a military advantage right away, democracy leads to a powerful cottage game that propels towards a later military advantage. Getting demo early off lib also gives a very good shot at getting SoL.

Civ4ScreenShot0003.jpg

Sorry, I forgot to save at this point. I wanted to see if the lib>demo attempt would pay off so the game is currently saved at 1300AD...

Sorry for not being more involved, school is very busy right now (and will be for the next few weeks).

1st place - PnP_Dredd - highest :science: of all the saves - Alex is strong which could be good or bad I guess

2nd place - Glansmannen - decent tech pace - weak exploration

3rd place - Lymond - 2nd best tech rate but with Pacal vassaled to Joao and Alex stomping on the other continent I wonder how to win this game

CBPE, me and Glans yet to vote! Looks pretty close to call.

Phew, tough call I'd say. Pretty close saves.

1st Lymond. Bad relations with Alex which could be interesting. Good techrate and, good backfill techwise. Tough to win Lib-race. Only one with 12 cities up.

2nd Gumbolt. Solid save, Lib soon in. Some unhappiness to deal with. Also interesting with war against both Issy and Victoria. Also good backfill techwise.

3rd PNPdredd. Very good techrate. Solid economy. Good opportunities for some binary research. Techwise, I don't get researching contruction? Astro is in but not near Lib. Relations aren't the best, work on those and trade trade trade. Also a questionmark on the Palace in Pyongyang?

Feels like anybody could have gotten the points this round.
Well, there it is.

1 - PNP_Dredd
2 - Glansmannen
3 - Gumbolt

It seems me that there's not much to add at the comments you've already done, I'd like to continue with the Astro-pattern in.

So far the votes are as follow which means I have a deciding vote. Between Glans and PNP! I will give the casting vote to Glans on basis that he is still likely to win liberalism race. The marble island needs settling but the tech situation is good. Alex with 16 cities should be a nice challenge. I wasnt sure about PNP new capital choice. It has little or no production although would gain from commerce.

3 to Glans
2 to PNP
and the third I will skip as it make no difference.

Glans 11
Gumbolt 8
PNP Dredd 9
Lymond 5
CBPE 2

It's great to see everyone vote in a round. :D

The next round will be played over the next 4-5 days with voting over Sunday - Monday. (This may change on time needs)
