Want an easy way to play Civ V online? Say hello to Giant Multiplayer Robot! (GMR)

What is the plan now that you can exit to main menu in hotseat with the upcoming patch?

Maybe just make GMR application focus pop up and the rest of applications (including CiV window) minimized, after detecting a save file?

One thing I've noticed lately is that after starting the client, often the first time I go to play a turn, that first save doesn't seem to load but just hangs. I close the app and redo and it seems fine. Last 2-3 weeks, maybe less.

An alert would be okay, but anything that auto minimises a window I might be using sounds pretty annoying.

I actually don't think we'll really need to do anything on our end, except maybe make the default for the GMR client be to not close CiV when a new save is detected. We already do everything Windows will let us to "activate" the GMR window and bring it to focus. I don't think we'd be able to minimize other windows, but we could definitely look into it when the time comes.

I have noticed that in the past but not recently, but I'll definitely try to troubleshoot it! Could you try disabling "Automatically download new saved game files" in the GMR client and see if that makes a difference?

I just had an idea about a GMR point system:

Player gets +1 point for taking a turn;
-1 point for spending two days in vacation mode;
-2 points for spending one day without timer or vacation mode;
-3 points for skipping a turn with a timer;

Player starts with 10 points (settler), and earns points to advance (50 points for chieftain, 250 points for prince, 1250 points for King, and so on...)

In order to earn more points quickly, player needs to upgrade account and join more games. Also player can see if other player is consistently taking turns based on their points collected. Even more seriously, if points dropped below 0, that player should automatically withdraw from all games.

That's so cool that you thought of this! We've actually been planning a system like this for a while now, slated to be implemented with our new community and user profile features coming next month.

We hadn't considered situations that a player might loose points though, only gain them. And the primary way of gaining points would be taking a lot of turns and taking them quickly. We don't have a solid grasp yet on what would be good numbers for it but something like taking your turn within an hour = 40pts, 4-hours = 30pts, 8-hours = 20pts, 24-hours = 10pts, and if it takes you longer than 24hours or you get skipped then you gain 0 points. Also while on Vacation Mode you would gain no points. We'd probably also include bonus points into the equation if the game has more players in it. Since it would be super easy for a couple people to jump in a 2-player game and just spam turns, we'd want to keep it appealing to participate in larger games as well, where turns come less frequently.

And the point system would have many levels of prestige, probably starting at "Settler" and increase on some curve up to "Diety" or beyond. Anyway it's all just theory right now, but we'd love to hear any ideas or thoughts you guys have! :)

I'm having a problem with this.

When I go to your website to log in through Steam it says "There was an error communicating with the network.Please Try again later."

This is the first time I've had this happen.It usually works fine.

Steam is currently performing maintenance on there servers (as mentioned on their Facebook account). Hopefully it will be back up soon, but in the meantime we won't be able to authenticate with Steam Community, thus blocking authentication with the GMR website.

Alright doen1000 it should be working for you again. Let us know if you run into any more trouble!

Could I be reinstated to the game "Modern Times?" I was past the new game limit when I was removed from the game due to a misunderstanding, and I can't accept the invitation to return. I would donate, but I have neither money nor method of payment.

Yes please, misunderstanding, and it looks like he's running afoul of the change to the game cap, trying to come back in after I booted him. Thanks in advance.

I don't know why the GMR steam logon website always says my login was incorrect when I use my iPhone safari to log onto GMR website. My login was fine when I use IE on PC. This thing happened when I updated to IOS 6 and it's been a while. The only time it works is when I cleared all history and memory and perhaps restarted iPhone, but just once. Anyone had similar problem?

My wife recently upgraded her iPhone 4S to iOS 6 and has been having all sorts of problems, including websites not taking her input properly. I don't have any solutions for you unfortunately, perhaps try a different browser on your iPhone, such as Chrome?
