Want an easy way to play Civ V online? Say hello to Giant Multiplayer Robot! (GMR)

zorzak posted this and helped many solved difficult save file. You can also try using DX9 or revert more turns.

If i have crash, i'm loading a SINGLE PLAYER save file (which is no mod/scenario* save file and it's from my installed Civ5) to "tell" Civ5-program to (something like) "activate" this KIND of save files to work on started game. When i do this, Civ5 "works" on THAT kind of save files and THEN i can load a multiplayer save file (which is no mod/scenario) with succes. I do not know if it's 100% works, but from 1 month+ it WORKS for me ALWAYS.*for now, i do not have installed any mods/scenarion and for now i am not going to play any mod/scenarion until Civ5-support make a workable patch to save files.

I was just looking that up to share it. Thanks for being pro-active and helping out EEE! :goodjob:

Alright it was pretty messy but I've got it all back on track with mblum subbed in and everything. The turn is currently Tabarnak's and I've verified that the save file for it loads and functions correctly. Good luck guys and let me know if you run into any more problems :)

Thanks oh so much!

Did you perchance figure out what went wrong, why the failsafe didn't quite work? Seems that since it didn't actually kick Islandia (vacation mode) it must have treated that as being "not a sequential kick" or something.

No, it would be very difficult to determine what happened after the fact. It's likely there are some improvements we could make to have it work more consistently but I think it would be a lot of effort for a small gain. I'm thinking it would be better to look into other options such as allowing the host to skip or kick players at their discretion.

Not sure if it was in repy to my help request (which I think got "lost" with the GMR update annoucement) but thanks for the tip.

I asked Klimek to try what you're suggesting.
Waiting for him to tell me if it worked or not.

Oh and great addition to the GMR website.
Thanks for the updates :)

I just had a strange experience with this program.

I was just playing my turn as normal, and when I finished I clicked to save.Well, I got the GMR app up, and where it usually has the button to submit my turn for Vanilla(the name of my game)it instead said "Cancel!Don't sub" or something to that effect. But it still let me scroll down a little and choose the right game, and then everything apparently went fine.

Quite strange.

That most likely occurred because the GMR client updated itself and restarted while you were playing your turn, which caused it to forget what game you were currently playing your turn for and so it didn't select one by default in the Submit Turn dialog. So nothing to worry about, should be a pretty rare case and like you found it didn't prevent you from submitting your turn :)

Thanks.I was just kinda wondering about that, but it didn't cause any harm.I did notice while I was playing my turn it looked like the GMR app was doing something.

Mel,

I'm not sure if you saw my previous post but could you help us with game #2201 when you get a chance?

Klimek says he keeps having CTD despite trying all known tricks and workarounds (direct d/l, lower settings, DX9, loading single player save 1st).
We also tried to revert to a previous turn (single step and full turn) but it didn't help either.
He said the crash happens right after the Civ description panel disappear but before the password prompt usually shows up.
Is it possible it's because one of the AI is offering him a deal which would normaly bring up the leader screen but then crashes because it also tries to show the password prompt ?

Also, it might just be a coincidence but, he mentioned that he got the same issue at the same time in an other game he's and an other player in my other game (#2407) got a CTD proble at the same time (in his case a direct d/l fixed it though).

If it's not a coincidence it would mean there's something on the GMR side of thing that is affecting the submiting or downloading of saves

Again, thank you in advance for your help.

Hey Carp, sorry that Klimek is still having issues in your game! I tested the save file for his turn and was able to download and play it just fine, which means that it's not an issue with GMR but suggests to me that it's subject to a widespread performance problem that exists with CiV right now. We've noticed that since the latest CiV patch that allows you to go back to the Main Menu from the Hot Seat turn screen, when a GMR turn is played after another turn was already played without closing and restarting CiV, the resulting save file can become "bloated" usually doubling the file size with seemingly useless junk left over in memory from the previous game played in the same instance of CiV.

These "bloated" save files are still functional, but cause some players' computers to crash trying to load them, probably due to insufficient resources (RAM and GPU Memory). We're hoping Firaxis can put out a fix for this issue, but in the meantime something you might try is revert the turn and have the previous player replay their turn in a "clean" instance of CiV, meaning start CiV fresh and then immediately play the turn for that game then save and submit it. This won't always work, but sometimes I've found it to help.

Hopefully this info might help in games were players are experiencing CTD. If all else fails usually the best thing to do is allow the player having the problem to get skipped that turn. Sometimes the save file works for them after it's progressed a turn and comes back. Best of luck and let us know how it goes! :)

Mel,

thank you very much for the detailed explanation and the info about skipping his turn.
Klimek managed to load the game on the next turn.

While chatting with him he mentioned an interesting piece of information that might help you and/or firaxis in figuring out what cause the bug.
He said that in other games he often get a CTD after he saves and on those occasion he can hear that a different language is being used on a tech discovery speech for example.

I find it extremely weird that a language setting would be saved in the game file if that's the case.

Thanks again for your help

I have seen as well that the language one player uses (maybe the host) gets saved in the save file, sometimes announcements or offers I get in game are in a different language. I'll keep it in mind as something that might affect our games :)

Hi, sorry if I missed this somewhere - on both of my windows machines, the GMR app auto-starts and auto-quits my Civ V whenever I download/save the game. Is this expected? Necessary? If one is playing lots of turns in a fairly rapid fashion on a slower machine, it gets to be pretty tedious.

Oh, and not to just pop in and complain, this is pretty cool what you've done. We're just giving it our first try, as we've wanted to play modded MP for years now, and had some questions..

Hey metalhawk, it's no problem at all, thanks for trying out GMR! You can control whether the GMR client auto-starts and auto-quits Civ V in its settings dialog. You can access that by clicking on your avatar in the top-right corner of the app. Let me know if you have any other questions and happy civving! :)

We just made another minor update to the GMR website. In addition to a game's host, the current player in each game now has the option to revert the turn back to the previous player. This will allow you to revert a turn back if you are unable to load the save file without needing to wait for the host. Hopefully you won't have to use it very often ;)

Great, I never thought to look there for a settings dialog. That really helps when playing lots of turns in the same evening (esp. on a slower computer...when starting up civ and loading can take longer than the turn itself...)
