What is
PBEM?
What is "
vanilla" Civilization? (I saw this "vanilla" word - too - many times...)
Regarding the 2 patches, exact, Gamershell was (I guess they updated their servers since) delivering an uprotected 2.08 (unprotected is 62 041 451 byes or 59.1MB), which I downloaded and installed (see my "beware" paragraph below). If it is removed, and if the community still wishes it, I will upload it on my site and give the link: it is a patch released from the programmer, no reverse-engineering, no unlegal cracks, so then it is not against the forum's rules, and this patch requires an official CD for re-installing Warlords. It is then only for those who legally own the software. Just let me know in your posts if you are interrestd in this link.
BEWARE: you will probably crash if you install the "unprotected" patch over your current installation, especially if you have mods installed. If you crash, uninstall Warlord (NOT Civ4), and reinstall from your original CD, be sure your "CivilizationIV.ini" has no reference to a mod folder, then apply the patch.
Do NOT install the mod "HOF", as after doing so the system crashed again (Windows reporting system...). I now use Warlord without having to introduce my CD, and waith for a new version of HOF mod.
I am grateful to Firaxis for this. As I own only official games, I feel very relax using
my software unprotected, and as I only use a laptop and is always on the move, it is very nice.
I agree with Arstal (post #127). And I regret that
www.direct2drive.com restricts too many on-line purchase/downloads to the american market.
About Warlords on direct2drive: "This title is available for purchase in the US, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom only.
When I asked direct2drive why they do this restriction, they quickly and kindly answered that the programmers of the titles are the one who choose what and who to restrict...
I WANT to buy the game, I am ok with protections, and I do NOT want to use a CD. It is why direct2drive is the answer as I can download an official game and use it without CD...
This is NOT nice for those who are not US (or close allies...), and it is encouraging the rest of the World not to purchase protected downloadable copies of the game, but just cracking them. Stupid move.
