Ok, I was playing a scenario as the Germans, I had a "mutual protection pact" & "right of passage" with the Mongols. Genghis had some units roaming around in my territory stomping barbarians, I got no problem with this, saves me from haveing to do it. But then something strange happened, I had a number of Cavalry placed within my territory as lookouts, suddenly a Mongolen Steamtank attacked one of my Cavalry. The Steamtank lost the fight and my Cavalry took a little damage. Well no message had poped up saying war was declared, and I went to the foreign addvisor and found that the "MPP" & "ROP" with the Mongols was still in place, and when I called him up he was smiling like this :D . Well I know it was a Mongol unit, had the right color, and barbarians don't have tanks.

So what happened here

could it be an assasin or the such like? or could the rules of the scenario affected the actual game play?

What's scaring me is a tank lost attacking a cavalry

Well, he said "steamtank" which makes me think it's not the regular tank, but maybe he's playing a Mod.

Yes, it's a Mod. that I was playing, Steamtank I downloaded from units forum, I use ti as an early Ind. age tank, and I'm going to have to think about it's numbers (losing to a Cavarly  )

Wilbill: I checked, not a hidden unit

I added the steamtank to this Mod. manually along with some others, so I know what flags & tags thay have.
But as I sit here typing I remember that I did import some stuff from another Mod. I'm going to have a detailed look at it, I'll get back too you all.
