So, I gave my 1st shot on the Monarch difficulty on standard fractal map.

I manage to climb to the top on the score list, none of the AIs would trade tech with me, even those that are pleased toward me. All of them gave me this "We fear you becoming too advance"

I think I got 2,3 techs ahead of them but I am missing a couple of tech from other side of the trees.

So am I stuck wif no trading partner from this point onward? Does this happen only in higher difficulty?

WFYABTA has nothing to do with how advanced you're compared to the AI civs but rather how many techs you've received in trades.

To restate what Elandal wrote:

The "We Fear You Are Becoming Too Advanced" (WFYABTA) reason why AIs won't trade is a bit misleading. It actually doesn't depend on whether you have more techs than the AI, but rather on how many techs you have received during trades during the game. Its based on the total number of techs you've received from all AIs, but each AI leader has a separate limit on how many techs you can have received before they will stop trading with you and give the WFYABTA reason. This limitation was put in for Civ4 because some players exploited the AIs poor tech trading in Civ3.

Once a leader starts showing that reason I believe the only way you'll be able to tech trade again with them is if you can get them to "Friendly" status, which seems to override WFYABTA. For future reference the total that counts is simply the number of techs received, not the value, so many players try to avoid trading for cheap techs that can be researched in a turn or two.

the limit is also dependent on rank, i.e. if you fall back in score they are more likely to trade some more techs ;)

Got it! Very clear and concise
Thanks!Validator.

I guess I should work on getting Friendly with one of them

Info here is correct as far as i know. In my last game on immortal, 18 civs something strange happend: while i'm still trading with Catherine, Frederick, Mao, Cyrus and Isabella (friendly) who vary from cautious to pleased with me Mansa Musa has shut the door on me for ages while being pleased. Also he was ranked way above me in score when he stopped trading. I've never run into this problem before. The only thing i can think of is that most of the trades i made were with him but i thought only global trades received counted for this limit. Or is it possible that someone bribed him into an gamelong trade embargo against me, i don't get it.

BTW i seem to remember reading that in industrial age you get to make some more trades, is this true? and when is this exactly, do you have to reach industrial age yourself or the Ai's or both.

Thanks, this is very useful.

A couple games ago, I was using the beeline&trade technique to keep up with other civs. I had just gotten a big one, and plotted out all of the trades I was going to make. After making sure every trade would be available, I made the first exchange. Immediately, everyone refused to trade with me. I was steamed. I watched as the English went on in the following turns and gave everyone else the tech.

I tried to made Alexander friendly with me last nite, and viola! No more WFYABTA problem, he is willing to trade with me again.

Weill, I guess there is no solution to this problem except finding yourself a gamelong trading partner.

Different leaders have different WFYABTA limits as well. It mostly boils down to Mansa going for twice the techs any other goes, and some getting wary at half what most go for.

Indeed, getting a friend or two is a solution there. Other solution would be to limit tech trading a bit - don't take cheap techs (those you can research in 1-2 turns yourself) as fillers for example, just let the trade be a bit lopsided (you get fair trading diplo bonus as well then). If you self-reserach the cheap techs you have used to taking as fillers in trades, you can continue trading all that much further.
