Wetland/swamp terrain graphics

Looks great! I think I'm gonna try using the blue swamp as a replacement for the flood plains graphics. Thanks! :goodjob:
Flood plain, could you post a screenshot of that?

Now we need a peat resource to give a production bonus for swamps. :)
Yes, but this should be modded to come quite late in the game, IMO. I don't think peat has been used for that many hundred years.

has anyone ever figured out a way to add terain, not just replace the existing one?

OK. This was a little more complicated than I thought. I (naively) thought that I could just rename Smoking Mirror's pcx file to floodplains.pcx. Nope! The files are layed out quite differently. Anyway, I did a little quick cut and paste and I think it's pretty promising. This is just a quick rough draft and needs some tweaking.

I can't work on it anymore until Wednesday or Thursday. Maybe SM can run with this. I'd like to see someone who understands these terrain pcx files better than I do take a crack at this. :)

The screenshot.

AFAIK nope -- we can't even treat Snowy Mountains differently than Mountains, nor pine forests from forests, etc. Most annoying.

Hmm, a peat resource...
Peat has been used for centuries in europe, cut and dried peat is used for fuel in place of fire wood. I think a two shield bonus should be apropriate, with standard swamp producing 1 food (eels etc..), zero production, and perhaps a single trade icon (the waterways of medieval and ancient swamp lands allowed early traders a network of natural cannals).

It fits really well:goodjob:

Is there a way to have all of the original terrain AND the swamp terrain? Because i would like both, considering that there are both jungles and swamps in real life.

yep, peat is a good resource for swamps. I can grab an icon for it from Civ2:ToT if you would like.

Sure, peat is widely used even today. I could do a peat power plant building which adds +25%(?) to production. Since the stuff important locally, the peat plant should have the resource inside city radius. Smoking mirror's bonuses are good for it, perhaps +1 trade is not needed.

DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT PEAT:
( sorry, couldn't resist)

World's greatest peat plant (in Haapavesi, Finland) uses 2,5 million cubics of peat in a year. It's power is 154 MW (plus produces heating for surrounding towns). It's comparatively small but effective, low pollution even if it is low-grade fuel and safe. Russia, Finland, Sweden and Ireland are the greatest users of peat as a fuel for power, this because of high quantities of peat in ground.

Come to think of it I'll make a cloudberry resource too, to give trade bonus, possibly food too. I don't know about you guys, but I'm crazy about cloudberries. If I have time I go to pick 'em for couple of days in swamps.

... Well, then, how about an acquavit distillery? :D

PS hmmm ... how can we INCREASE happiness and DECREASE productivity at the same time ...?

you can set a resource to give negative shields, unfortunately it only affects the city that has it in its radius. It would be great if you could set a luxury resource such as opium to affect all cities.

i edited one of the available resource gfx if anyone is interested. does it at least look like a peat?

embryodead, that looks like a big pile of... peat! Another option would be peat in piles collected from the ground like in photos here.

Oz, that's a great idea. Reminds me of an old lady my family knew, who had a habit to drink a shot of cloudberry liqueur every day, you know, for the heart. As the lady got older her memory got worse - she started to forgot if she had one already. When we visited her she sometimes was more than merry company. Realizing she was tipsy and remembering a single drink, she insisted that liqueurs these days are too strong, probably filled with impurities too. And changing the label didn't help at all.

Back to the peat, photos:
