What are you favourite Unique Units to use and abuse in VP?

I know a lot of them have been tweaked from vanilla and even from older versions of VP. Which ones do you think are still really strong in a good way? For my money, I like the Aztec Eagle for the free workers from kills and insane healing from kills (+40 with authority), allowing you to kill into otherwise dangerous tiles. The other one I've enjoyed recently is Carolean on Sweden, getting March for free allows you to ignore that side of the promotion tree and just go Drill->Cover->Cover II and eventually into Drill III and Stalwart with all the XP Sweden gets.

Which UUs have you been enjoying lately?

I honestly love that Kris Swordsmen are a relatively early unit that keeps their unique upgrade on promotion and have multiple different types of abilities! :)

Edit: others have mentioned it before, but Cataphracts feel really good to use. Love fighting with them. They're mobile, they hit hard, and they're tanky.

I also like having lots of and lots of Mohawk Warriors. They're especially good on jungle/forest starts, but in general I just love having a strong unit that requires no strategics that is good for attacking and defending.

Build 4 Warriors. Upgrade to Hoplites. Demand like 160 culture from a nearby city state and then go conquer your entire continent.

My Top 3:

1) Spain: Go Authority or Progress (Authority is better thanks to Alhambra), Beeline Chivalry ASAP. Upgrade your Horso Bois to Conquistadores. Win the game.

2) Zulus: Go Authority, fight early and often. Get Impis. Conquer the world in record time if you aren't doing so already.

3) Rome: Go Authority or Progress... Whatever, Rome is Amazing with both. Get to Masonry ASAP to unlock Terracota Army and your OP Unique Building. Unlock your Legions. Make an Army... Profit.

Special Mentions:

Caroleans.
Mandekalu Cavalry.
Cataphracts.

All the knight replacements are pretty good. Knights are strong to begin with, and their mobility allows then to attack then rotate back to heal.

Cant go wrong with legions too. Rush them and just go slam legions into your neighbor.

Oh and Hwachas are hilarious.

2 UU less likely to be mentioned are the Babylonian Bowmen and the Moroccan Berber Cavalry.

The Babylonian Bowmen start with the Indirect Fire promotion which allows them to ignore hills and trees when picking a target, and I'd say it is underrated. I've played Babylon a lot and it's one of those things I can miss when playing another civ.

Berber Cavalry come a bit late but they don't have any movement penalty as long as there is no river on the tiles they move on. It allows you to use them in a manner that would be impossible for other civs, even Mongolia depending on how much rough terrain is involved.

Mandekalu Cavalry are good, especially with the Songhai UA boosting their mobility.

I think Hoplites are great, they're great for tributing, they're cheap/spammable, they can take cities relatively easily with Drill and the Statue of Zeus, and the Discipline promotion is more powerful than it used to be, when stacked with the Greek UA you can often get about 50-60% CS buffs, which is pretty good.

If we are talking OP units or units setting the bar for power level of contemporary units then Mandekalu cavalry, Roman Legion ,Carthaginian Quinquereme, Japanese Samurai and Dutch sea beggar are the answer IMO.
If we are talking fun and interesting then Polish Winged hussar, Danish berserker, Indonesian Kris, Zulu Impi, and Incan Slingers are my personal favorite units to do silly stuff with;
  • Winged hussars are ridiculous if you beeline metallurgy and upgrade a bunch of knights to create a critical mass of them large enough to put enemy units in positions they cannot retreat from often one hit killing units thanks to their heavy charge promotion.
  • Danish berserkers are the definition of skirmish infantry for pillage war even against opponents who are on a similar level of overall military strength; Dow someone then get berserkers to pillage as much land as possible then get out ASAP.

  • Kris swordsman promotions dictate a lot of how these units specialise; they don't have a wanky strategy to abuse but they create some funny scenarios when you get a bunch of them with the healing promotion that just don't die.
  • Zulu Impi is a ridiculous unit both in terms of how fun to use they are and how they can literally obliterate an army without losing any units if you can upgrade them enough.
  • Incan slingers unique promotion is just a better version of the feared elephant promotion on a ranged unit which is already a good promotion to start with.

Depends so much on the difficulty for me.
A lot of pre gunpowder UUs are very situational on emperor.
On higher diff where other UUs dont have much impact, bowmen is still very usable and the extra promo is kept on upgrade.

Samurai are one of the better melee units for similar reasons.

Btw there was an almost identical thread just a few days ago...
