Just start playing. The differences between the tribes are important strategic choices, but it's actually one of the more subtle points of the game. You should either pick a tribe that has a unique unit that "looks cool" to you or just pick one that you have some historical/nationalistic affinity to -- as in, "Hey, I studied Ancient Greece in school!" or "Well, I'm English, so let's try them!"

Victory happens so late in the game that you don't even need to think too much about it for several hundred (!) turns. Just focus on getting wealthier, bigger, and more powerful.

For now, I'll just say "It's okay to be patient." You don't have to be getting bigger and stronger every single turn; downtime is important for you civ. The more you play, the more you'll start to understand when it's okay to slow down when it's time to speed up.

Stick to the tutorial till you understand what it's trying to tell you. Then stick to the easiest difficulty level till you've won a couple times. From there, you can start looking up serious strategy and climbing up the ladder of levels.

I suppose the most important thing to say to a RTSer such as yourself is to understand that you're not going to win a game of Civ in between the rising and setting of a single sun. If putting weeks into a single game does not sound appealing to you, you should probably take a pass on this title.

Start a game at chieftain level. Keep the manual nearby and use the Civilopedia often. Don't worry about winning your first few games, just learn how to move units, build cities, engage in combat and build your civilization.
Read the War Academy articles (in the Quick Links at the top of the page). Start another game or two and use what you've learned. It doesn't take long. By the time you've gotten the basics down, you'll be ready to move up to Warlord level and play with a good chance of winning.
