What art does FF need?

Ok, how is this?

.dds attached to this post too. It should work, but I've not tested ingame yet. Resource icons are a bit new to me...

Pegasus Riding Recurve Archer!

Might do windsword next.

It'd probably be overkill to do EVERY austrin unit, considering that things like warriors are generally going to be obsolete by the time you get them, but I'll see..

Any other requests, by the way? I noticed they don't have any unique champion or axeman.....

Very nice indeed. I'd agree that it may be overkill to do everything (unless it turns out to be easy to do so - units using the same base models with just texture changes etc) - was mostly aiming to have a little more variety than my original 3 (which I spent part of an evening on - they're far from perfect). A decent Mage would be a priority, both unmounted and pegasus riding... These are definitely more "wild" in appearance than Amurite aristocratic mages - not in the animal sense, but more in a wandering the hills, irrational mood swings, shouting at the wind eccentric mad-mage. Short attention span and prone to overacting (they have great power but tend to use it all to solve minor problems).

I'm considering making the Austrin archmage into a UU and linking it in more heavily to that theme. Regarding the axeman/champion - unique artwork for any unit that doesn't already have it would be appreciated and useful. None of it is urgent so if there are other projects to look at I'd say do those first, but given the standard of units you've produced so far, I'll be happy to include any others you come up with :goodjob:

What did you use for the existing pegasus riders?
The nif is kind of messy, and blender refuses to load them. They don't animate in nifscope either, and I'm kind of surprised they work ingame at all. I might have to remake them to do any editing. You might notice that I made the wingspan a lot wider with the recurve rider. I think that looks a lot better. I could make the others like that too.

Also, are you willing to add new UUs to go along with art? I did have a neat idea for a champion, similar to the recurve archer though with a little more armour, but overall lightly armoured compared to other champion units. And wielding two swords. Maybe it could have extra first strikes instead of the +25% vs melee.

Oh, also, I don't think an axeman much suits them at all, given that axes are big heavy weapons. and I think it'd be more fun to make a swordsman.

And it means a lot to me that you appreciate my work. It's nice to have a laundry list of stuff to do. When it comes to art, I seem to be capable, but... lacking inspiration. So it helps to have some specifications to work from.

I wish you were online more vehem. :<

But anyways, I'm doing a mounted warrior, with the primitive club, rather than the sword. I figure I'll do a swordsman too. Rather than the traditional swordsman anims, I have an idea which may work, and use a somewhat more unique anim set. I'm also wondering if you'd prefer any particular style of sword? I'm thinking a curved blade similar to the windswords (but shorter) to emphasize the light nature of it.

Looks wise, I'm planning for now for him to be essentially a warrior holding a sword, but if some inspiration hits be along the way, I'll do my best to make it look a bit more unique than that. (feel free to post ideas everyone)

I will, of course, also do a mounted version of the swordsman.

I'm having trouble visualising the mage for now, I'll give that some more thought. You told me plenty about personality, but not much about appearance. Is an austrin mage likely to be brightly colored, or similarly practical/drab like others. What about gender? male/female? And how about age? old man, middle aged, etc. What about a preferred weapon. Staff of some sort? or a melee weapon perhaps.

Oh, one more thing. I noticed that the melee type pegasus has a rein on it. But the Archer does not. This is inconsistent.
Do you prefer with, or without the reins? I already uploaded the recurve rider without one, but I can change that if it's needed. On the other hand, they don't have saddles, so it does give a more "bond with the beast" feel to ride bareback

I'll be online a lot more next week - I'm on holiday this week so I'm only posting via my phone as and when I happen to be in a wi-fi spot. South-west coast of England isn't reknowned for embracing technology (most shops aren't capable of accepting card payments for instance in this town...)

The existing artwork are simply whatever unit I could find that could be reskinned to look Austrin and could have wings added. Reins are purely at your discretion - but I agree that magical riding beasts probably respond more to the nature of the rider than mundane riding tack.

===

Light armour sounds ideal for champion and swordsman does sound good for the axeman slot. For the champion potential UU, I'm thinking a skirmisher role is appropriate (though frustrating for enemies). The Windswords are lightly armoured and specialize in avoiding direct combat with enemies using Bladewind - the Champions should be a step on the evolution toward that. The other thing I'm thinking might work is having Champion and Windswords start with Blitz (combined with Travel Light that let's them munch a couple of very inferior units in a turn - "sweeping them away like the wind". Double swords (scimitars, or other short/curved blades) sounds like it fits eitherway...

===

The major defining characteristic for the archmage would be that he spends months out on the hillsides - so his robes (at one point a decent and practical travelling garb) will likely be dulled by time and misadventure. I'm not sure how subtlely you can convey the unpredictable/half crazy personality with an expression on low poly models, but I think that's something that would make the model "great". The robes themselves should be large and "billowing", but worn. A staff does fit the image in my head - raised in both arms as he shouts from a hilltop, calling down a maelstrom on the enemy army...

The "weather mage" from "Wizards of Morcar" fits the image nicely - though a little neat. Not sure how good this image is (from a small screen it looks ok, but a little small) but it's bottom right one...

Should be possible to find a bigger one on google somewhere if needed...

Good stuff. Now you can work on my Chi-poodle, or a cha-weenie!

Hey Warkirby, I got a question for you. I just finished writing to XML the first of the mutation ideas...the massive brain (renamed to massive cranium) mutation...could getting that mutation be allowed to change the size of the model's head in game? I think you were talking about promotions changing art in the luichurp thread?

Regarding the Austrin swordsman, how about dual wielder, dagger and sword? or handaxe and sword?

To make the massive cranium promo reflected in unit art, you'd have to edit every model that promotion can be applied to.... Probably not worth it.

It is a caster only mutation so there is potential but that is still alot of units :(

Any chance you could whip up some Siegesmith promotion icons? I need them for all of these...

Machine Spirit...

Sure is WH40k around here >.>

I have ideas for only a few of these. so some hints as to the intended art direction would be nice. I'll make the buttons, but specifying hoow they should look is the job of the requester

Well, I've got art for the machine spirit promotion already. Grapeshot should basically just be a spread of pellets on a blue background, a basic promotion. Sighted Shot, Artillery, and the other ranged attack promotions should probably be a cross hair of some kind... Craftmanship I have no idea, aside from the fact that it should be one basic button, with stars denoting ranks.

Blackblood shot there is already a button for, maybe edit it slightly so archery and siege have different art? Plague-Infested should be a fun one..... I see a sickly green cow, flying through the air.

Preview of the Austrin Swordsman I'm working on.

I decided to go a little more indepth than just a warrior with a sword. I've used the warrior as a base, but added more clothing, and generally gone for a more civilised (but still fairly wild) look. I've also physically increased his muscle mass a little, to give the general impression of a better trained and conditioned warrior.

You might notice the tartan shawl over one shoulder. I kind of percieve the Austrin as having a scottish/irish inspiration. And I've tried to make this swordsman look like a fairly traditional highland warrior. The green color gives him a mostly irish feel, I think.

Also, Dierdra (well, Dierdre, but the difference is negligible) is a name with Irish origins, and was also used for a Scottish leader in Sid Meier's Alpha Centaurii. :)

Might notice he doesn't have a sword yet, I have an idea for that. A bit different from the standard longsword+swordsman anims. I'm going to try giving him a big scottish claymore. Think William Wallace in braveheart. Will use axeman anims instead of swordsman, so he'll actually swing/hold with two hands

hope Vehem approves of this art direction.
