in regards to megastacks showing up suddenly, i've had this happen a few times too. it almost seems like there's too much luck to civ sometimes, because the random starting positions affect the overall game a great deal, whoever gets the best spots always do better. and sometimes u get attacked by such a huge stack, its like the only way u could have defended would be to build only military, which isnt always the best strategy. i've played a lot, won on immortal a few times, and im positive that luck does have a great deal to it. there's been lots of games where had a megastack attacked at a certain point i would've lost.

Stuck? Not exactly. I am playing on noble, but I am not even trying to move up, at least right now. Maybe in the future, who knows? But for the moment the game is still challenging, so there is no need to change: usually I win, but much depends on the starting location and how the map suits on the leader that I chose. As in real world, geography rules!
Anyway, I know that there are many many people round here that are much better player than me, and I try to follow their path!

My problem is I'm a terrible warmonger, I much prefer to be a peaceful builder, and I can never seem to build enough military. For example, last game I was stuck between three larger civs, two of whom were my religion, one who wasn't. I expected the attack from the other guys at some point, and had about 7 units in my captial, way more than I usually do. Well war gets declared,a nd teh guy shows up on my doorstep with around 40 units and takes my captial in two turns. My other cities had no chance of producing anything fast enough to do anything (this was on epic speed).

How the heck do you counter something liek that and still have improvements in your cities? i was having trouble keeping the places happy and healthy as it was. I couldn't even get my religion buddies to join in on the battle!

Very frusttrating.

You'll get away with building a large number of cities early on playing lower levels but frankly you shouldn't need to. PC has a significant disadvantage compared with you. You'll tech alot faster than they will. I did one game as warlord when I first got the game. I stopped playing after 200 turns because I was getting so far ahead it just wasn't challenging.

It's starnge, but sharing techs on the higher levels actually significantly increases your technological development. On noble, for example, the PC usually can't keep up (I don't always need to run a tight ship), and chances are I won't develop gunpowder to 250th turn. I'll average gunpowder on the 200th turn on noble due to trades. And still end up more advanced (I'm very good at the econmic aspects of the game during the 150th - 300th turn).

I guess the main advice I'd give is balance your resource use and ensure you build a mix of troops. More to the point, plan what troops your going to build and base it upon production levels and need to expand. You should seek to eliminate your rivals and conquer their lands (land is power? No, cities is power). And use slavery to whip out those cheap but essential buildings while using overflow for troops or other buildings(This remains the quickest way of developing cities rapidly, particularly with good food resources and suits charsimatic leaders). I have a very good system for doing this. I can use it to develop really strong infrastructure (even when playing non-economic civs).

If your getting stomped on playing warlords I really have to question your diplomacy. If you have little in the way of an army and well developed cities you're kind of asking for it, particularly if they demand tribute. I don't usually have to worry about AI dcalring war on the lower levels unless I'm sat next to a propper psycho. If someone asks for tribute, I only refuse if I'm intending to declare war anyway.

Hmm.. I've changed my mind, I'm "stuck" on prince, I tought I was better then I am

Stuck on prince. I do fine on monarch right up to the renaissance era. Once that era hits I go from pretty much even in tech or one up and BAM, im 4 or 5 techs down right after..... Dont understand it.
