What diplomatic situation is this?

I'm trying to help my buddy Egypt (who is waging war against Spain and losing miserably) by declaring on Spain and relieve him a bit.

When I get into diplomacy window and offer my services hoping for a small reward for my efforts, the Spain option is greyed out and it says "A diplomatic situation prevents this action".

I can't imagine a diplomatic situation that would make him refuse my help in saving his butt.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found out. Spain made a Defensive Pact with a player with whom I'm still at Peace Treaty.

Ok, I waited until Peace Treaty expires and made the same offer to Egypt (who is barely surviving at this point). And the answer from him was: "Impossible"
