What does your name mean?

"Vrylakas" is a term used by the Slavs and ancient Greeks of (what is today) northern Greece and southern Albania, in the 6th-9th centuries, to mean "vampire". I only know that because of philology classes I had to take, so don't be impressed.

I am a professional researcher so my job is to find targeted pieces of information that are often obscure or seemingly hidden. I've often felt in my job like a vampire because I kind of swoop in unexpectedly, grab what I need and beat it, often with others only becoming aware of my presence after it's too late and I'm gone. Don't worry; everything I do is legal. It's just that hunting information among folks who sometimes are not forthcoming makes one a bit...sneaky...

Because of this my e-mail is under the "vrylakas" name and it just made it easy for memory's sake if my Civ Fanatic Forums pseudonym was the same. Occasionally you'll see me put the "
vampire.gif
" at the end of my posts; it's easier than writing out "Vrylakas"....

Well spotted. I deliberately chose it that way back in 1992. Most members of the Germanic language family (i.e. most North European languages), of which English and Swedish are part, have a word for eagle which is pronounced that "erne" but spelt in different ways.

Also happens to be my last name...

I use it whenever I play Civ. no matter which tribe I play.

My name doesn't mean dick. It's just a name.

Grigory Raputin was...

a russian peasant. born deep in siberia, he was orginally named "Novykh" but was called "Rasputin" by his fellow peers due to his scandalous sexual exploits. the man was said to be able to seduce any woman. he was hudge, 6 feet 8 inches tall. anyway, he had seemingly mystic powers, being able to heal the wounded.

so anyway, he got famous because in the early 1900 the Czar's son, Alexis, was found to be a hemophilliac. the empress Alexandra found and brought rasputin to nicholas and was seemingly able to cure to stop his uncontroable bleeding. (twice he was credited with saving the czar-to-be's life). however, as world war one bogged on and russia was getting chewed up by the german war machine, the czarist regime fell out of favor. rasputin became a central point for anger amoung the russian people. many thought that it was actually rasputin who was running russia, while having an affair with the empress alexandra, while her husband Czar Nicholas II was away trying to lead the russian army against the germans.

so in an effort to save the czarist regime, some of the other "noblemen" (inculding the Czar's first counsin) murdered rasputin. ledgend has it that Grigory Rasputin took six times the amount of poison needed to kill a normal man, then was shot at point plank range with a pistol. when a conspirtor came to collect the body, rasputin was alive as consious, and strangled the man. he attempted to leave the palace but was shot several times as he climbed the gate. unable to fight back, he was tied and thrown in the river. the autopsy revealed Grigory Rasputin died of drowning.

More bear than human.

The name Iroquois, meaning "real adders," is of Algonqian origin. The Iroquois referred to themselves as We Who Are of the Exteded Lodge. They are not a tribal group at all, but an alliance of tribes that dominated the vast area stretching fom the Atlantic Coast to Lake Erie, and from Ontario down into North Carolina. Acording to tradition their league was formed about 1570 by the efforts of Hiawatha, a Mohawk (not to be confused with Longfellow's romantic hero), and his disciple, Dekanawida, a Huron by birth. The original Five Nations confederacy was made up of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Senca, tribes which before that time had often been at war with each other. In 1715 the Tuscarora joined the league, and from that time the Iroquois have been known as the Six Nations. The league formed a democratic tribal republic with councils of elected delegates. Chiefs were elected from nominations by the tribe's matrons, and acted with the consent and cooperation of the women of child-bearing age.

I had lived in western New York state for many years, and came to know the local Seneca and Tuscarora reservations well. I've visited Red Jacket's grave in Forest Lawn Cemetary in Buffalo, and the Seneca museum near Salamanca. Though he's a bit... biased... I have attended many of the Seneca historian John Mohawk's lectures at the University of Buffalo and locally. I recall reading once that the Iroquois languages are supposedly related to several native language groups of the Southeast, most notably Cherokee - but at the same time, their material culture is strongly akin to an obscure native culture that inhabited western and central New York for centuries before the Iroquois called the Owasco.

Europeans today have an image of American Indians based on the popular Wild West images from films. These are based on the North American Midwest Plains Indians. Friends in Europe (and even an anthropologist who'd lived with Blackfoot Indians) were surprised to learn about the Iroquois, because they break the common stereotypes; they lived in semi-settled (and in some cases stockaded) communities, they had a far more developed toolkit, they knew agriculture, and were both politically and socially more developed than the Plains Indians. Also, the Iroquois do not fit the European stereotype of the peaceful, nature-loving savage; they waged sophisticated wars of conquest far up and down the Eastern seaboard of North America and could be quite brutal to enemies. They sided with the Dutch in the 17th century French-Dutch struggles for the eastern Great Lakes (modern New York, Quebec and Ontario) and slaughtered an Algonquin tribe to extinction in the process.

In the Americas the most advanced native civilizations developed in Central America - the Incas, Mayans, Aztecs, Moche, etc. - but for North America, the Iroquois definitely were among the most sophisticated and developed.

Just curious, what do you name your cities when you play as the Iroquois?

Is it Vrylakas or Vrykolakas?

Rasputin how could you choose such a name? This man was a personification of the devil himself! (from what I've read in books least)

Sorry Az - I did read it but forgot to answer. Chalk it up to old age.

It is Vrylakas, but keep in mind I was reading this in Polish at the time - it may have become a bit distorted. As well, over the past 1500 years it may have changed in Greek a bit too. I don't have the original text, but let me rummage at home and I'll see if I can find a reference (I'm at work now).

It's nice to have it substantiated though.... Thanks!

Iroquois: Have you ever heard the 1960s-70s Canadian Metis Indian singer Willie Dunn? I've got some of his material from the CBC. At one time or another he's written songs about just about every North American tribe.

Rasputin: Do you play the Sims? Last night I found a Rasputin skin download that looked fairly realistic. Check it out here:

Iroqouis, you didn't explain why you chose this name. Are you a member of one of those tribes? Live in the area and just interested, or what? Very interesting info, BTW.

EDIT: Fixed spelling of name

To start with I was just interested because of them being included in Civ III. But now it has become something more...

However, since I never stick with anything long I will probably be onto something else by the time Civ III is released.

But in the meantime I will use my talents to turn up all kinds of interesting information for us to feast on!
