What does your Surname literally mean?

In the case of a person, "Le doux" is more "the gente".
"Doux" would mean "soft" for a piece of cloth.

"Dux" is latin for comander. It evolved into "duke" etc.

How country stone? My German isn't good.

It's an old bloodline of knights/judges/laternothins. I even have a coat of arms. My current surname derives from Wielandtstein von Vohburg, actually. Wielandtstein is the first castle, the castle of Vohburg being the second.

Thnaks for this very useful piece of knowledge which has nothing to do with the French origin of Ledoux.

Palivec ~ Fiery

Also name of Czech poet and Czech literal character.

Mine surname means "Siskin". A siskin is a small bird.
My mother's surname means "a hawk".

I know - lower-class footsloggers. Ironically fitting. Also, the Household cavalry don't have them, which is even better.
Well, "lower class" is debatable. Men-at-Arms were well-equipped professional soldiers, not just peasant spearmen, fighting as heavy infantry and cavalry, with the Serjeants-at-Arms being comprised of the best of this class. Not quite knights, but not just "footsloggers" in the manner of pikemen or archers.
