Did they hire a million new writers to pump out more content, or have they just figured out a new website design to trick me into thinking they have alot more material?

I don't know, but at least this design is crisper. Was pretty cluttered lately.

Those Rasiej ads are getting annoying though...they're everywhere and the guy is polling at 6% for a race nobody cares about. And mainly advocating something that has nothing to do with the office. [/end ad rant]

What is that guy running for and what does he advocate? I see his ads around the city, some crazy fist gripping a lightning bolt and a weird name. (In my head I pretend it is Rasie J.) I'd vote for him just based on the meaningless of these posters.

Public Advocate for NYC. Did you know that if the mayor dies or can't serve for whatever reason, the PA takes over? Yet they have little real power in their office.

The guy's name is Rasiej (ra-SHAY)...and his big thing is getting wireless internet to all New Yorkers.

He's running in third place in the Dem primary polls (no real Republican opposition) behind incumbent Betsy Gotbaum and Normal Siegel. Had a class a year ago taught by a guy who lost to both of them for Public Advocate...got me an internship in the City Council.

I haven't read the Onion but it looks like they have a lot more actual stuff from this layout.

 Sounds like quite a joke...

So I can expect to get online from my laptop - excluding my own network and the networks of my neighbors - if Bloomberg gets stabbed on the 4 train? Oh boy!

No, if he's Public Advocate, he'll want to use that office to build that network. Stabbing Bloomberg on the 6 train (get it right!) will be your own business. :)

He would have to haggle with the Council and the Mayor for the budget. The office's budget is small and the official duties in the charter are limited. But there's nothing saying that he can't do that.

I see. I also see that this thread has been totally highjacked by New Yorkers discussing something totally uninteresting to anyone else. ;)

Well, why is he wasting precious campaign dollars advertising on a mostly national site? I can't believe I wasted space in my rant blog on the Public Advocate race....oh well......maybe someone will vote in that election.

And New Yorkers do as we want!

Have you looked around that site yet though? More Onion content would be a great thing...seems kinda light for a weekly.

Edit: Actually, it looks like the content is the same, but more organized and has some archives to it. I remember they took out the archives....they used to have it all linkable in its own section.

This was tried in Denver, with a donations drive headed up by the libraries. They had the money, but the commercial providers stomped all over them with lawsuit threats, alleging unfair competition.
