No one ever told Sid and Firaxians that this would cause a massive outrage in all of the Muslim world? Just look at that poor Danish magazine who had the same misfortune by publishing his image very recently. The image of Prophet Muhammad is considered the biggest taboo and is strictly forbidden. Of course there are no such laws to prevent that anywhere outside the muslim world but it still sparks a lot of fire. Firaxis has just shipped tens of thousands of copies of CDs and DVDs which include an image called leaderhead_arabia_muhammad which is not even used in the game for any reason. So it was totally unnnecessary. I think someone in the staff was testing its effects trying to imitate what that Danish newspaper recently did.
Don't just come and tell me what is wrong with that. I couldn't care less, but this is a very well known fact and common courtesy to other people's religion. If they are sincere about what they wrote about religions in the game manual, they should stop treating muslims as Usama's equals as there are hundreds of millions of muslims who detest fundamentalists equally as any other reasonable person.
So however small it is, it is still a visual image of the Islamic Prophet and they should just overwrite that file in the first coming patch (ASAP) and probably come up with a weird excuse saying it was suposed to be Muhammad 17th of Kuwait or another similar lie.
Once they've cleaned up the mess, they can lock this thread and any other existing trace to avoid the issue becoming public.

Nice try :) But Muhamad II, (better known as Mehmed II the Conqueror) never lead any Arabic soldier, nor administered any Arabic territory. During his reign Ottoman Empire had not expanded towards Arabia yet. It would have been a better guess if you said Muhammad II was a Greek leader, since he has Greek blood, spoke fluent Greek, administered all of the Greek speaking territories and proclaimed himself Roman Caesar, protector of all Greek Orthodox religion.

It's really sad to see average people like yourself not being able to discriminate between terrorists and innocent civilians. Can you please tell me what is the major difference between you and a terrorist who doesn't make the exact same discrimination? Terrorists kill civilians because they don't see the difference between innocents and people whom they think are responsible for certain policies. That is exactly what you do. I hope some moderator with a sense of reason will remind you of forum rules.

well said

Well, even though I agree that no one should be labeled or discriminated against as mobboss just did.. Muslims need to start taking a stand against terrorism as well, else they risk seeing more racial tension like this by the next generation..

?!?!?!? Yeah, I'm sure that with all the other stuff going on in the middle-east right now, THIS is what's going to cause "massive outrage in all of the Muslim world"...

While I agree that sensitivity to Muslims is in the economic best interest of the publishers and that might include not including Muhammad's image, I think it's going a BIT FAR to say that they did it on purpose.

In fact, I think a more likely scenario is this - maybe Muhammaed was intended to be a leader of the Arabs or in a scenario, and they pulled it at the last minute when someone found out the reaction that hardcore Muslims would have. Pulling stuff off the media when you're just about to burn it can be extremely expensive and risky, so it would make sense that they might just tweak a scenario or something.

BTW, I briefly searched for this image you said is there, but I didn't find it. It's not installed, and it wasn't on Disk 1...

It's in the file Art0.FPK.

I have a thought. I think that maybe the kind of fundamentalist Muslim who gets all uppity about images of the Prophet being sacreligious probably lives in the Middle East somewhere without access to electricity or plumbing, let alone a personal computer powerful enough to play Civ IV.

Seriously. The people in the Muslim world who care enough about this sort of thing to be outraged aren't rich enough to afford the game, let alone the hardware it runs on, or the electricity need to run it, and therefore, don't matter in terms of business sense.

I bet some Amish in Pennsylvannia were outraged over the "sex game" thing in GTA: San Andreas too, but who cares? They don't have electricity either, and it's not like Rockstar Games was going to sell a boatload of video games to the Amish even if the content was culturally sensitive. Same deal vis a via Civ IV and the hordes of easily outraged Muslim fundamentalists who make less in a year than I do in a week.

Unfortunately it's the other way around in real life. When you read about the lifes of the actual terrorists and their leaders, they are always from rich, or upper middle class families with college education who either are living in a western country or have been there for quite a while. (see 9/11, London and Madrid terrorists, see CIA trained Usama himself). Never underestimate your opponents. These people are cruel and some of them are like what we know from Bond movies: Evil Genius. Treating all muslims as terrorists or depicting them like some primitive barbarians living in caves without electricity and plumbing humiliates them and is not doing anything good if we want to win their hearts and have them embrace democracy.

Well anyway, I know you feel strongly about this, but arent there worse things going on in the world for Muslims right now? If I were you and felt strongly about seeing things done right by Islam I dont know that I'd be complaining about an unused image in a packed resource that may or may not be of the Prophet. Just saying, is all :)

I was:blush: so no more on that issue. I hope others will follow moderator's sound warning as well.
