What is Muhammad's Image doing in game files?

Heheh, anybody who remembers storiers from The Onion has gotta have something on the ball!

By the way, your point 2 is interesting and a funny one. Of course it's not always cut and dried, but certainly the essence of religion is toward belief, which is the polar opposite of empiricism, the basis of the scientific method. We have had many attempts at "scientific religion" in the past that tried to merge both fields, with resounding failure.

Clearly, you're free to feel however you want to about faith and religion, and if you want to think of God as a fictional "sky wizard", more power to you. However, could you please point out to me what nation has a majority population that is atheist, as your post suggests?
England (or the UK - I only heard about it as this country so that could be either England, the UK, Great Britain or the European Union. Its confusing being English I can tell you) where a survey showed 55% (ish) of people didn't beleave in any higher being.

Note that many of these statistics disagree with one another as people don't like to write down atheist often and I know of many people who will write down Christian on a form despite not beleaving in God. Also there are a lot of people who really should have there own section - those who claim they beleave but never attend church, etc. There section would be called the "just in case" section.

Typical example: at university in my flat there are 5 of us and only 1 person is religous (though he doesn't attend church) and I'd say that the percentage of the people that I know of that belave in a God is about 10%.

For all those whinning about Firaxis including the picture (which is not ever used)... Firaxis was more than kind to all the fundies out there. Political correctness is the only reason all religions are the same in the game, and differ only by name. If they wanted to keep it all realistic, rather than missionaries, Islam would build Suicide Bomber's units (think Civ2 Fanatics), Christians would build Inquisitor units (the ability to kill Great People from other civs), and Hinduists wouldn't be able to destroy barb animals (due to reincarnation).

Do you get all your news about the real world from a satirical newspaper?

Would you consider this to be a satirical article?:

I don't know about you, but I don't want my kids to learn that tsunamis and volcano eruptions are caused by angry Gods...

Many nations are quite secular, believe it or not.

Oh, I don't dispute that, don't get me wrong. I was specifically addressing LordRahl's "majority" assertion. Which, it turns out, I misinterpreted because he didn't mean atheist by that, and I thought he did.

The only reason I even mentioned it was simply to strive for accuracy because I don't think, other than China and other "officially atheist" nations, any country has a majority of atheists. According to the CIA world factbook, even the Netherlands, which I figured would have the best shot of acheiving a majority, is at 41%.

I doubt you would be able to find any educated religious person today who doesn't believe in plate tectonics.

I'm actually a bit skeptical about this. I would think that the majority are religious, if we define "religious" as believing in a higher being. I suspect, in this case, that a reasonable number of the population are deists that would believe in some higher being, but not accept organised religion.

Surveys can be treacherous things, it depends on how it was worded. I speak as an agnostic, or agnostic atheist, as I prefer to describe myself.

I will be happy to be proven wrong, however (really!).

Agreed. All too often atheists and angostics and even people who just don't subscribe to any organized religion are lumped into one category.

Oh - you'd be surprised - there's quite a few of them out there, that believe Earth is only 6000 years old, and dinosaur bones were scattered around by satan to test our faith...

On the subject of "freedom of speech", I'd like to say that the majority of atheists I have met are *******s.

I on the other hand, have nothing but the greatest respect for religious fundamentalists, because it takes a lot of stamina and dedication to successfully block out all forms of logic and reason for so long.

Well as I've always ..."I believe in non-belief as a form of protection against the non-belief of believers in my practice of non-beliefs"

Indeed.

Are you familiar with the Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy books? Where Zaphod Beeblebrox has "peril sensitive sunglasses" that go black at the first sign of danger in order to protect the wearer from anxiety. Creationists have a similar device, evidence sensitive sunglasses.

Plate tectonics? That was the flood, dear boy! :crazyeye:

Somehow I suspect that you thought the same of them before you actually met them.

Interestingly, I'd also guess you would feel it bad or unfair if someone said that the majority of Muslims they have met are *******s.
