have not yet read thread, but:
secular jewish takes a variety of forms.
First are the secular jews, such as a certain person i know quite well, who hate religion, are incredibly atheist, but you make a slur against judaism, he will **** you up. the ones who love being 'jewish' but not actually religious in any way. they will celebrate Hanukkah by lighting candles, and celebrate any holiday involving lots of food/alcohol (quite a few of those), but not observe them actually.
then there are the simply secular people who do nothing jewish but maybe Hanukkah, but will have certain semblances of jewish stereotypes in their family. maybe having a family dinner on friday nights, as opposed to sundays (without say, lighting Shabbat candles or saying kiddush, just having a family dinner then), have a lot of deli foods, even more chinese food, have a stereotypical jewish mother, go to the movies and (in toronto, Sea Hi) chinese food on christmas, stuff like that.
secular≠reform. i know some reform jews who are more observant and religious than some conservative jews, etc.
in israel, secular jews are a large part of the population. a large part of them are either
a) Kibbutzniks
b) russian immigrants
but they can be anyone. the split is probably 40-20-40 in israel for 45% orthodox religious, 10% masorti/reform/etc., 45% secular.
note that hiloni (secular jews) are reported to be 20-80% of the population, nothing is official.
as a generalization, most secular jews are VERY proud of their jewish identity, but at the same time very agnostic or atheistic.
