This goes for any type of game (PC Only please). Of all games you've played, what is the best AI that you have encountered that was either nearly impossible to beat or you could not beat it for 3 out of 5 times?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Prolly something like Chessmaster or Fritz.

I can't really think of any others that were tough to beat after a few go thrus

Ok, since chess and Civ are obviously good AI opponents, let's leave those 2 out.

Revised Question:
Outside of Chess and Civilization AI opponents, which AI opponents have given you a hard time defeating? Were you ever able to defeat them?

I know you specified PC-Only, but NinjaGaiden for xbox was hard. For PC, Lego chess! I have a hard time beating it on the highest level  .

(Shoot no Chess... Other than that... Probably Majesty on the highest level. Or Command and Conquer: Generals... That AI was decent).

Do we include difficulty levels where the computer cheats?

I would say no because thats not coding in good AI, thats just showering them with advanatages so you don't have to code in good AI.

That's correct. Anyone who has read the translation of the interview that German magazine Computer Games did of Civ4 will be happy to know that Civ 4 AI does not cheat, which was a major complaint when playing Civ 3 at higher levels, the AI wasn't smarter, it just cheated a lot, and had a very unfair advantage. Thank God that problem has been addressed in Civ 4.

So no, cheating does not count when discussing tough AI.

Hmm. The one in Wesnoth is decent. Better ones exist, but most of them have a trick you can pull over and over again to counter them, once you know what you're doing.
I can beat it 1vs1, and 3vs4, but not 2vs3 or 3vs5, and that's with perfect team play.

Can I say Angband (and cousins Moria, Nethack, Rogue)?

Definitely NOT Battlefield 1942.

Oh but how it makes me laugh. Running around in circles, manning machine guns that point towards their own army. I could almost hear my computer screaming "I know I'm better than this...what's going wrong?"

The best was on Market Garden. You didn't even need a gun.
Just jump into a jeep, and drive to the bridge. There, all the Germans, marching in a long column, one directly beind the other, jsut begged to be run over.

That's why it's mainly a multiplayer game :P

The bots in Quake3 on legendary or whatever hard difficulty were pretty damn tough (of course that was more then 5-6 years ago).

Maybe so, but they should still have given it a better AI.
And to be honest, some of the smacktards you come across online almost simulate the AI perfectly.

I'm still to see better AI than Operation Flashpoint, they can be frightningly brilliant one moment, & hilariously stupid the next. Kinda like humans.

Yes it is scary how fast they can react to different combat situations.Sometimes though not always.
