What is the connection between the resurection of Jesus and bunnies?

I wasn't raised Christian so perhaps I am missing something here. Where do the rabbits come in? Is it in the Bible? Couldn't penguins or woodchucks work just as well? At least penguins lay eggs.

i think it has something to do w/ a pagan hollyday, the bunny is the god of fertility......or something weird......i dunno.......i always wonder that too

Christians will tell you that bunnies and eggs have nothing to do with Easter (at least some of the ones I know), but I'll tell you why we have them. Eggs and bunnies represent fertility (I once had a bunny, and trust me, they're fertile), and fertility embodies birth, and during Easter Jesus was 'reborn' after being hung up on a cross by the Romans and then stuck into some cave for a long time. Plus, half of us Christians wouldn't celebrate it without the offer of chocolate bunnies and eggs (I know I wouldn't! :D ).

Now Jesus died or if you prefer, was killed. He lay dead for three days, and then rose from the dead. Wouldn't that technically make Jesus a zombie? :mwaha:

You know floppa21, I think you're right. This may change my entire perspective on christianity! Aieee!!! (Sorry, I just saw Jesus. :D )

Yes, but you will find Christians are not good at logic. Also the fact that he is son of god = god raises some difficulties.

If he was god, how could he be killed? At least not by a human. He must have committed suicide (because he let himself be crucified and accepted death). So he did not go to heaven, at least not if katholic rules apply to him.

This and other argumentations caused Graham Greene's books (The Power and the Glory, The Heart of the Matter) to get put on the Vatican index (as late as last century, tolerance is not a christian attribute).

A better question to ask would be why is Easter celebrated when it is, considering it is supposed to be the anniversary of an actual historic event. Apparently they were able to check the birth certificate, but the death certificate got lost.

Back on topic: here's the story that the Christian Reader printed in 1998:

http://www.christianitytoday.com/cr/8r2/8r2047.html

"Although rabbits have long been a symbol of spring, chocolate bunnies are a relatively new phenomenon. Easter bunnies made of pastry and sugar first became popular in southern Germany at the beginning of the 1800s.

The Whole Earth Holiday Book connects the rabbit and colored eggs with the story of a poor woman who could afford no sweets for her children on Easter. She colored some eggs and hid them in a nest for her children to find. During the hunt, the children spotted a large hare in the bushes. They told their friends the bunny had left the eggs, and so the Easter bunny story began.

The Easter bunny shows up in many European Easter traditions. However, it is not the only animal believed to bring colored eggs. Swiss children believe a ****oo brings the eggs; Czech children wait for a lark. German children have a lot of options—hoping that a rooster, a stork, a bunny, or a fox will bring their treats."

Hope that helps.

i thought the rolling of the eggs represented the rolling of jesus' stone from his tomb?

If you were a four year old kid, which would you rather have - a lot of chocolate on easter and a lot of presents at christmas, or a dreidel and a yarmulke on chanukah? That's how Christianity works - manipulating western capitalism to gain a greater following.

What else is there to do? :D

I always though that the Christians had hijacked the spring equinox festival (like so many others) and 'pasted' the celebration of the resurection on to it . In this way they could avoid being called trouble makers for creating a new festival. After all early chrisitanity was notorious for its desire to fit in.

Oh, I don't know, bash things that actually cause death, pain, and suffering in the world? Insulting Christianity is ridiculous. Find someone worse to criticize, things that ACTUALLY hurt you and other people.
