I just started playing a month ago or so and haven't figured out what religions to go for.

So far i really like druidism and shamanism for the extra food and Buddhism for the good wonders.

What are your favorites to use?

I use Buddhism for the science bonus plus the wonders.

Andeanism is incredibly strong - it is one of the only religions (the other one being Bahai IIRC) to give :science: bonus to the temple, not just the monastery (which goes offline with Modern Physics). And Andeanism comes several eras earlier than Bahai.

Edit: Another side effect of this: A :science: bonus for the Cathedral as well.

What are your favorites to use?
Early Tengrii and then as many afterwards as I can. With a "few" exceptions of course.

Asatru will have you dominate the Classical/Medieval if you play your cards right. Nearly all religions have their supercoolness factors though.

I like to "import" helentism, taoism and sikh for unit bonuses. But the religion i want is .. can't recall the name but it's the Egyptian one due to all the good bonus buildings. Free school of scribes in all cities, bonus military production, food etc. it has bonuses for most things. Also I like to found confucism to get the movement bonus on units in the founding city. Yes, I allow multiple religions.

My preference lies on Andeanism, for it's science, though like most things it's a bit like pokemon gotta get 'm all :D

I found out Nagaism is insane. +15% production and food if you can get sheep + cow + pig. And some tiny bonusses for units. Nothing in the early game gets you such a bonus so quickly.

I think we should give the religions that do nothing special, like canaaism, some special building, bonus or unit too (eventually). Seems a bit unfair that some religions are strictly better.

I've been doing some studying on Caananism here and there. Very interesting stuff. A huge part of the animosity between Judaism and Caananism (well and after the conquest of Israel) was largely regarding patriarchy vs matriarchy. Astarte, the re-envisioned Ishtar/Innana of previous religions, the mother of Baal, was quite an interesting, almost Druidic figure. Caananites would recognize her with wooden poles, representing trees and life and all in all her essence at this point. However, this is an interesting blend in of the essences of other goddesses from around the region, considering that peaceful trees weren't exactly the way one would envision Innana, goddess of War and Lust, whome she is an evolution of in concept.

Ugh... I could go on and on here. I think my point is that we could include Astarte in the Caananite religion and use that figure to expand a bit on what Caananism 'means' in the game. I've always also been an advocate of using Caananism in combination with the Human Sacrifice worldview to enhance that as well, given the claims in the Bible that Jehovah was against them so much due to their sacrifice of their own children to these gods.

The religions were designed (by AAranda mostly) to be suitable to your needs at differing points in time. If you are sticking with one religion throughout then you are doing it wrong:mischief:

I go for
  • Druidism/Shamanism pre Ancient or Nagaism/Tengrii if I don't get my first pick
  • Egypt religion Ancient to Middle ages
  • Asatru for conquest
after that I can't remember because I have not got that far in a game recently (this year).

Making sacrifice and slavery connecting with some religions would make them more useful. From both sides.

Andean and Druidism should get a mini golden age every time you sacrifice a captive. I have not tested it but the code is in the missions. I think it is one turn for a military captive and 5 turns for a captive civilian. It does require some buildings though. Some of the buildings increase the length of golden age.

Perhaps Caananism could have ways of increasing the yields from sacrificing captives?

I'm not sure why Andean... they weren't really THAT sacrifice happy were they? Naghualism on the other hand, the Aztecan religion, those guys sacrificed so many people it would make your head spin, off your body as you fell down the steps into the huge body pit below.

I suppose they did find some mummies frozen near Lake Titticaca that were voluntarily sacrificed as it was an honor to be. And the Druidic people were pretty into that too, going by all the bog mummies we've pulled up. So well preserved, those things.

That sounds amazing huskold!
You could even have a different state religion give different bonuses for sacrifices! If one was crazy enough to code that...

Asatru did human sacrifices every 7 years, watch vikings =p
