Continents. I usually end up on the smaller continents, sometimes alone, which is nice for my playing style.

At first I used to be really into Pangaea maps, but as i've moved up in the difficulties i've moved on to continents. I liked continents because you don't have to deal with everyone right off the bat, and sometimes you can conquer a whole continent rather easily. This sets you up for a rather laid back route to victory ;). Continents just allow you to get your composure more easily off the bat.

Land is power, and in no other maps is it more prominent than low sealevel pangea. Big land wars are great and big continental wonders gain more value from the map. Every civ is also touchable, buffer states only last so long... :)

I guess I'm the first, and probably only, person to say Lakes. On that map you've already run into just about everyone by the time AD rolls around. Everything is tighter together on Lakes, not just civs, but resources as well. It has "early rush" written all over it!

Pangaea is pretty similar but adds some water to it. Then there's Archipelago on archipelago setting, which can add quite a bit of interest to the exploration phase (i.e., how *am* I gonna get all my ships over there?)

I also like Big and Small, its basically same in character as Pangea, you can have lots of land if you set low sea level and so on. It also has nice choke points which make the game more interesting.

I can't see tectonics map option in my civ4 BTS map type menu, in the custom game thing. Hmm, do I have an older patch or something. I wonder why I don't have it enabled, do I have to download it from this site or something?

I love the great plains (what is not to love about a 6 cow riverside start :)) and I also love the fantasy map with crazy resources.

Fractal could bring you
Pangaea,
Big uninhabited islands worth discovering and settling, or even
Isolation.

You don’t know what you’re going to get. Playing Portugal or Rome, you don’t know how much of a factor your UU is going to be. It could be huge, it could be nothing. This is why I like fractal – the player has to be ready for anything. I like the challenge.

Pangea/Inland Sea – Mongolia, Rome etc. seem to have too much of an upper hand.

Water maps – Dutch, Portugal, Vikings, Carthage seem to have too much of an upper hand.

Continents – fine, but kind of boring. It’s usually too obvious too soon who you’re better off getting along with and who you need to take out.

In fractal it often takes me a while to even figure out where civs are located, which is a nice challenge, and makes exploration more important and that much bigger a part of the game. Diplomacy also seems to be more complex.

Also, I really just haven’t liked other maps that much. For some time a while back I liked Big & Small but it seemed to widen the disparity between good starts and crappy starts. The barbarian ice islands are kind of cheesy too.

Every time I don’t play fractal I am unimpressed.

I think I would experiment more with fantasy land as a change of pace if it had oceans.

I love lakes! I've never won a lakes game, but the whole strategy of not needing a navy is really interesting. Being able to beat the living daylights out of the whole world without building boats is pretty neat. And there's nothing like a long walk to get a girl in the mood for war.

I wish the lakes in Lakes were bigger. As it is, it's like a ginormous Pangea.

I prefer pangea with low water. I just don't really like the naval warfare. SMASH AND BURN!

Although I have had some fun with continents. Seems with all the love for fractal I'm gonna have to try that one :) (I tend to play marathon on huge maps which usually end in slugfests seeing who can pump out the most modern armor in a single turn :D)

Try out a GlobalHighlands on HUGE -- I haven't counted the actual # of land squares, but the world height/width are about 50% bigger in a huge/GH than a huge/Pangea

The last couple games I've played have been on Lakes and I've grown to love that map type. I really like how you can (usually) get your first two or three cities on the same lake and how you can share seafood; especially nice with any civ that starts with fishing.

Lakes is basically Pangaea, but better.

Custom Continents - 1 per team

Not the most interesting or with much variety, but has some fun naval requirements for Conquest/Domination and in a challenging game can force Permanent Alliances (which are really fun)`

I've tended to play continents, but it is getting a bit stale for me. It always seems to be that the 4 people on my landmass all either are the same religion and get along all lovey-dovey, or we get one stray who the rest of us beat up on. I think I might try playing a terra map next game, since that will give some hints of pangaea, but get some of the "race to the new world" syndrome which could be interesting to try out.

I like continents. Fractal is pretty fun too, though.

No love for PerfectWorld? I love that map script, its basically an upgraded Tectonics!
