I have never liked the militaristic victories hence why all the militart heavy civs are at the bottom. I've always been a culture victory fan but since there really aren't many culture heavy leaders I went for the very urban heavy leaders because planning out cities is going to be great in this game with the new district system. After my first two games i'm going to jump to the very diplo/infastructure heavy civs to play around with the changes to those systems.
So far, just In Battuta, but I can pair home with Aksum, Egypt, & Spain

Sar replied to the reddit thread confirming every civ will have a gameplay unlock
Makes sense. I'm really excited they went this route because it means all combinations are on the table but you have to put the work into earning them which isn't just good from a gameplay position but from a in universe version. It would feel terrible if you're planing on a rough terrain heavy build and a player living on land that could balance a level picks the Incans.

I've thought about this way too much to not have an answer. I like all the leaders but don't have a favorite. At the begging i'm going to be more interested in learning the game mechanics then the leader/civ abilities.

My first game will be one of:
* Tecumseh, because I pre-ordered him :lol:
* Benjamin Franklin, because I like scientific
* Lafayette, to learn more about diplomacy. And I really like the musical, "Hamilton" :thumbsup:

I will wait until I learn more about the game before using Ibn Battuta, Catherine, or Amina. I don't want to be parked in a terrain like tundra or desert when I'm learning.
Make no mistake, I will try them all over time.

Even though Machiavelli seems like the most fun leader to play as, based on the thematic stacks I want to go with, I won’t get around to trying him out until about my ninth game, especially since I want to try to avoid playing the same civs as much as possible until I’ve played most of them at least once (excepting only a few).

First game: Western Civilization
Charlemagne
Greece -> Normans -> Germany

Second game: Romance languages
Lafayette
Rome -> Spain -> France

Third game: Conquistador
Isabella
Maya -> Inca -> Mexico

Fourth game: “America! F*** yeah!!!”
Ben Franklin
Mississippi -> Hawaii -> America

Fifth Game: Washington Monument
Tecumseh
Egypt -> Shawnee -> America

Sixth Game: Jihad
Ibn Battuta
Persia -> Abbasid -> Mughal

Seventh Game: City Wok & City Sushi
Confucius
Han -> Ming -> Meiji

Eighth Game: The Third Rome
Catherine
Rome -> Mongolia -> Russia

Ninth Game: “Oops, All Great People”
Machiavelli
Greece -> Spain -> Mexico

Eventually:
Khmer -> Indonesia -> Siam

Possibly never, except only for an achievement:
Aksum
Amina
Buganda
Harriet Tubman
Songhai

* Lafayette, to learn more about diplomacy. And I really like the musical, "Hamilton" :thumbsup:
Lafayette is a good pick by himself but he's gonna have some insane Mexico synergy. His ability gets him extra policy slots and he gains military strength for Traditions. And all of Mexico's Traditions grant abilities based on how many traditions you have installed, one of those being Strength in friendly territory.

Really? None of these leaders and Civs have abilities that make them worth playing? Are we literally just basing this on... visual characteristics?

Look dude, I have no desire to keep on trolling and shading you, but at a certain point you will have to become a bit less narrow-minded and a bit more receptive towards leaving your comfort zone.

Maybe just a wee bit.

Especially considering that we have no idea what Buganda's bonuses even are.

Civ7LeadersTierList.jpg

I kept the leaders for which i couldn't find information in Rac's very useful Civilizations and Leader's overview out of the pool.
  • First game will be either Tecumseh or Ibn Battuta. I'm very curious about the new diplomacy and the independent powers so why not benefit from being suzerain of CS as i'll try to befriend them anyway, plus i want to play Shawnees sooner rather than later. Ibn Battuta is the master explorer, with the old, criminally overlooked, Civ5 American UA, plus he's packed with all sort of generally useful bonuses that will surely make jumping into a new game much smoother.
  • Then comes a bunch of leaders i'm very curious about. I've always been a big fan of Incas in previous civ games and plan to play them relatively soon, Pachacutti combos with them nicely and guarantees i can play them, nice. I loved the occasional OCC game or playing as Venice in Civ5, so Augustus towns-powered mega-capital should be fun for me. On the other hand, i never really liked espionage in Civ but i'm curious to see whether they finally made it interesting and that's where Harriet comes in. Isabella is there for the fun of going for a NW start, although i expect to reroll a few times if the map doesn't please me. She was either very fun, or very frustrating in Civ5.
  • Follows a bunch of leaders with various options to help them grow their cities/empire. The obvious outlier here is Trung Trac, i've never been much of a military-victory guy but i will try a more militaristic game at some point and with commanders being the big addition to military, i'd rather go with better commanders than more or stronger troops.
  • The last two tiers are the more military oriented leaders. First 3 have half military, half non-military abilities and i will probably play them at some point, even thought DLCs might delay when. The "pure military" leaders i will probably save for when they are featured in Game of the Month unless i really have fun with the new combat mechanisms.

I'm definitely torn on who to start with as leader more than I was at first. It was Trung Trac + Maya (I like science and want to try out the new commanders)... but then a string of new contenders showed up. Ibn Battuta's flexibility and the fun of Isabella's Wonder starts mean I expect I'll play them both very often. Catherine and Tecumseh just have abilities I really enjoy.

The next rung has leaders with niche but interesting abilities or useful start biases.

After that Amina and Trade-Xerxes... I like trade, I don't know whose trade version I like best.

Then peaceful Ashoka and Augustus don't feel like they'll fit my playstyle, but I'm sure I'll get round to them, and I prefer other science leaders to Franklin or Confucius.

Charlemagne, other Xerxes and other Ashoka I'm not really interested in their playstyle at all. Tubman was the disappointment of the leader reveals for me. I was really stoked to see her inclusion, but her abilities didn't wow me in the slightest. She might be my first attempt at modding in Civ7 to get a more interesting ability (to me), as I would really like to play her!

I hope Civ 7 has a way to randomly select leaders you haven't won as like in Civ 6, or even better (considering the legacy path stuff) a random choice weighted to who you've played as least.

I pledged that I would play as an artist first if one gets into the game, and thus, instead of Tecumseh, I will be playing as Jose Rizal. I intend to learn as much as I can about him and in the upcoming days I plan to read Noli Me Tangere, even though it was never translated to my native language (and reading this much in English will be more of a challenge) to prepare for the game :p

As a Filipino I will definitely play Jose Rizal on my first gameplay. Close second would be Harriet Tubman, followed by all other leaders that were never been in Civ game before.
