I would've liked to play Large and Huge maps more, but contrary to Civ4, I kinda find Standard maps more enjoyable. This is probably at least partially due to turn times.

On a work night when I can't stay up all night, I'll usually start a game on duel size if I'm playing Civ. However my favorite is on the weekends when I have the time to work all the way through the game is a large map, which is how I voted.

By the way, where's tiny? I find that smaller maps are better for multiplayer.

I knew I was forgetting one! I was at work when I put the poll together, was going off memory. Tiny crossed my mind, and then I talked myself out of it. I was like "Tiny? Tiny's not a CiV map size. That's what duel is for. Don't be silly."

Sorry. I talked myself out of a poll option. Stupid WORK! If I had been at home, this never would have happened!!!

I play small because standard and larger maps typically take too long to achieve any sort of domination victory (I know you just have to take the capitals, but I get more satisfaction out of taking over everything).

I prefer the large or huge map for the space; settling and setting up an empire is fun to me. But late game it really bogs down and just takes too long.

I like the pacing of standard maps but it usually gets crowded pretty quickly which I dont like.

Voted Standard, but considering going down to Small for awhile since I also play Quick, and don't usually have time for long protracted games (Standard size standard speed can take me a week or more to finish).

Have only played one Tiny game and it was not very satisfying. Nor was Large, though...

Large. Strangely enough my PC (which is certainly not cutting edge) can handle huge just fine, but I actually find huge is too big and gives the AI loads of room to quickly expand into, making it a slog to even trim them, let alone take them down.

With the AI bonuses, they can expand like crazy and grab huge swaths of land in a way a human play simply can't do. This leads to them having many, many big cities, which in tern leads to them having a big tech lead and mountains of cash.

I find that unless I'm super-aggressive from the start and all through the game, the AIs become too powerful, too quickly and any later wars just turn into a nuke fest.

Hey everybody, first time poster here!

been playing civ for about 2 years now, IV hooked me and almost ruined my college career and ciV has been so much fun. Anyway i'm playing pretty heavy right now, and frequenting the forums.

I always play Huge/epic or marathon. i love those games that are more like chess. I almost always go for a cultural victory too. Although, hearing what people are saying about the lag i'm thinking of going down to standard and seeing if thats bearable. My main gripe is that i love to have room to expand wide with my 3 cities, boost the hell out of culture and get angor wat to make an awsome sized civ with only a few cities. on smaller maps i find i usually have to settle for less defensive positions. I pride myself when i can defend my civ from the run amuk warmongers with very few units.

anyway my 2 cents.

thats how i play it usually

Standard. Becuse my laptop can survive at this size.

My very first game was a Marathon game with a huge map. It took me one month due to loading times. Although I had lots of fun I saw that my laptop couldn't stand it.

Currently, I'm playing standard size Epic or Marathon speed games. Before the last few patches I was sticking to Small, but since I haven't had any crash issues lately I've been playing standard, and enjoying it a great deal. I think I may even give large a try in one of my next games. My load times on standard in the late game seem to have gotten much better.

At lower levels the AI can't take advantage of space. AT higher levels they fill it completely and are near unbeatable.

I'd say stick to Standard or Large, and feel free to throw an extra AI or two into the mix.

I play small because 8 players in mp game just don't work entirely...and i hate duel games...tiny sometimes but small is my favourite pick.

If I could id play max civs max cs marathon and huge but my CPU isn't good enough so just large but more often standard :(

Mostly large map/standard speed since the min city distance was increased, probably 2:1 large vs standard size. Before the city distance was changed I was almost exclusively standard size.
