"But wait, Egon", you're saying. "Isn't 'Across 110th Street' by Bobby Womack kinda more soul than funk?" Well, you're not wrong, but it doesn't have to be straight funk to be funky - just listen to the bass & guitar - and of course funk and soul are cousins, if not siblings.
I was reminded suddenly of Vaults last night. Couldn't believe I'd forgotten about them. They really only have two songs I like, but I adore the two songs. On "Premonitions", the singer, Blythe Pepino, reminds me of Annie Lennox quite a bit.
