What other games do you play regularly?

Civ takes up a LOT of my free time. Otherwise i usually play ultimate team fifa13, or as a social game with friends.
Besides that,
League of Legends (don't hate), although most of my friends make fun of me and want me to move to dota2. I just don't know if I can make the switch anymore, and I don't have the free time to re-learn everything. Invested 3 years into that game, but it's really getting stale.
I played both mass effects, loved them, bought the 3rd one but haven't even installed it yet.
Diablo3 is still on my pc, but I haven't touched it in months.
Star Wars Empire at war is nice for a 30min skirmish.
Finally i'll play worms armageddon with the girlfriend :p

Crusader kings 2 and Victoria 2 I hardly ever play civ 5 anymore.

I bought aoe3 complete on steam sale and was kinda disappointed in the graphics. I thought it was a 2009 game but it looks like circa 2005 to me. Idk hard to gauge older games since graphics have jumped by leaps and bounds since then.

I loved ME2. I have ME1 but never got that into it. The controls just aren't as good but maybe I'll give it another go. Still haven't gotten 3, waiting for it to drop to $20.

Now Crusader Kings 2... I have this game but it turns me off so much, it's so complex. I feel like I would lose myself it in for months if I could just get past the initial hurdles.

I too am looking forward to new sim city. I have 4 and still play it on occasion. I love spore and darkspore. I just love maxis games.

So really no one here plays Dota or defense type games?

Agreed. That said, if you can get over the graphics, then AoE2, or even the slightly-newer AoM (Age of Mythology) was far superior to AoE 3. You won't find them on Steam I don't think because of age though.

ME1 you only play to import at this point. I got all three on sale, and am in the middle of my second trilogy play-through. After playing 2 & 3, 1 is really lackluster on the graphics and combat. 2 is most likely the best of the franchise, thought I personally enjoyed 3 as well.

I really am not trying to insult you or anyone else by this, but this opinion is the difference between Civ 3/4 players and Civ V players. Civ V players (where this thread originated?) more often see Paradox games as too complex, whilst older game fans see them as generally on target. Whether this is because these fans simply have been playing longer, or because they inherently prefer more complex games is not something I can comment on.

If you want to try and figure it out, there is a thread in this sub-forum here, as well as the actual Pdox forum here. Even if you don't want to register, there are enough new players often enough that the general "New Player, Please Help" threads are one of the most common. Browsing might help you. The AAR section might also provide some tips.

Thread here. I am looking forward to this game as well, though the odds of me getting it at release are probably 30/70 depending on what else is out and what I am playing. If it gets good reviews, I'll probably get it at some point though. The only SimCity I ever played for a long amount of time was 2000 though.

I don't actually know what Dota is, though I've heard of it.

Been playing a lot of Fire Emblem: Awakening and recently picked CS:GO back up. Used to love the DoW franchise but I'm not sure what's going to become of that.

I also have a bunch of backlog from Steam sales that I need to play. I stick to PC for most big titles (only miss out on a couple exclusives) and Nintendo for all the old franchises that I love to keep up on. Best of both worlds, IMO.

The original was released in 2005 and expansions generally don't upgrade the graphics. The units are obviously crap when zoomed in, such as the short cut-scenes during the campaign, but overall the game from a zoomed out top-down view seem all right to me.

I have AE2 and Age of Myth, great games, I got them back in 2002 ish, around when myth came out I think. Another really cool game was a star wars one called galactic battlegrounds based on age of empires 2 engine. It plays very similar with building upgrades, unit controls/abilities etc only all star wars universe. The campaign is kind of bad but skirmish mode is really cool.

You kinda jumped the gun there bro, I'm an old school civ player all the way back to civ1. I actually don't like 5 much at all, feel like it's way watered down from 4. Civ4 is probably my all time favorite game. I was simply stating CK2 has an actual learning curve, unlike a lot of new games and I haven't had the time or patience to sit down and learn it.

Dota stands for defense of the ancients. Surprised you haven't heard of it. It was originally a warcraft 3 mod but it's spawned into a huge genre of games including league of legends, heroes of newerth, smite and dota2. They're tower defense style games but you control one hero, usually in a top down rts kind of view and you have limited abilities, usually 4. So it plays like a small scale rpg but you're playing a tower defense game. It's very fun, games are like 45 mins so you can play a little or a lot and get a taste of competitive non-fps pvp without having to sell your soul to mmos like wow or guild wars. It's on steam and free to play, I'm surprised no one's heard of it.

Oops. :p Sorry if I offended you or something.

To respond to the learning curve of CK2, that is very true. Took my way longer than normal to figure it out. Once I got it though, it really is a fun game.

Dota sounds intriguing though. I've heard of all of those types of games, I just haven't played any. I suppose my problem is a very spotty internet connection. Articles I've read on them seem to imply that timing and reactions are important, which might mean I can't do them. Might be wrong though.

You think CKII is complicated? I dare you to try Victoria II.

Although I don't really get why people complain about CK2 having an extremely steep learning curve, but maybe that's because I've played other Paradox games. I thought it was way easier to learn than Civ IV, for example - I mostly figured out CK2 on my own, but I had to look for tips online before I became any good at Civ 4, and even then I never moved past Prince.

Hey, never assume you can't. Practice and you might surprise yourself.

I think he meant that because his internet is spotty, lag and such may cause problems.

Other than Civ? Europa Universalis III and Chivalry: Medieval Warfare are the winners of the past half-year for me. EUIII is a fun non-Civ strategy, and Chivalry is a fun slash-'em-up, and even more so when played with friends.

I second DrZero's endorsement of Dominion, too. I don't play it often enough to say I do so regularly, and have only played the base game, but it's always fun when I do.

That's because it is a 2005 game. I got it when it came out back in October 2005 (same time that I got Civ4, actually), and played it quite a bit in the following year. I'm kind of impressed it's been mentioned this much and apparently still is active? I burned myself out in 2006, but wouldn't mind playing a couple rounds if I could find my install discs.

I think it does depend a lot on having played similar games before. I was able to jump right in to Civ4 without reading anything and know the ropes and be competitive on Noble, but that's because I'd played tons of Civ3. The CK2 demo didn't take that long for me to pick up due to familiarity with EU, but it was definitely longer than it took me to pick up Civ4.

Whereas when I first tried Civ3 (my first game), I was last place on Chieftain. I became competitive on Chieftain pretty quickly thereafter, but I'm sure it would've been a similar start for me in Civ4 had the latter been my first Civ game.

CKII is actually less difficult to learn by far than Hearts of Iron III. That said, CKII isn't the easiest game to play right-off-the-shelf, but as Paradox games go, CKII by a wide margin is probably the most polished.
