What version do I buy (new to game)?

Could someone please suggest what version to buy? I'm aware that Civ3: Complete includes the add-ons (Play the world and Conquests), but is it only available for PC?

Do I have to buy the Game of the Year edition, and then the add-ons?

Any explainations/ recommendations would be helpful, thanks.

Welcome to Mac CFC

Buy the cheapest one you can find for Mac. Don't buy a PC copy. You can't get anything but the basic Civ3 for Macintosh. As far as I know, Game of the Year is just a marketing package with a few extra bits of paper and a different box.

Any Mac CD you buy is likely to have version 1.14 or 1.21. If you get 1.14 then upgrade immediately to 1.21 using the updater linked on MacSoft's site. You'll need 1.21 if you want to run the map editor available around here.

For playing, I recommend you patch up to version 1.29b2. It's stable, and file-compatible with the PC version 1.29f, so it will run mod packs created for that PC version.

If you want to play any cross-platform games with Windows players - Succession games, GOTM, SGOTM ... then you'll have to get the patch to 1.29b2. I've now added my download link for the 1.29b2 patch to my signature, and it will patch anything you buy on OS 9 or OS X.
