Tough question, there are theories that just wont die and are held as true today as they were when the said scientist proposed them, will they remain true who knows, but what in your opinion is the key development in human understanding. Who is the greatest in a Muhamid Ali style, in as much as you can say when the giants shoulders they are standing on are also pretty important. Who broke the mold, left the rest for dust, eclipsed the others in a blinding flash of inspiration.:)

The invention of pornography is the most significant advance in science. Like ever.

Possibly Einstein's entire life...or the Romans, who invented the basis for today's sewer and road systems.

fire. nothing else contributed to our survivability more

I'm with Gold Eagle here, Romans really had great and healthy cities for the time. There are major highways here in France that were built over the former Romans roads to give you an idea.

agriculture. When we didn't have to spend all of our time moving around from place to place hunting animals we had free time to invent more stuff, like the automatic machine gun ;)

In the future: nanotech. For now it has to be free porn.

Or pornograpy.

Fire, or the wheel for that matter, were of course pretty instrumental to human development, but I wouldn't say they are very important as inventions. Their discovery is quite easy, and it occured in many different places with no contact with each other.

In terms of the greatest breakthrough I would say Gravity, though of course this question has no correct answer.

The scientific method, as it allows all other science to be objectively tested.

The Onion - Rogue Scientist Has Own Scientific Method

I like this view, I think I agree. Great link btw, love the onion.

@#$%ing great,' "Bombarding a plutonium nucleus with accelerated electrons, long believed to produce a nuclear fission reaction, has, in fact, no consequence at all," Hapner said. "I'm going to prove that if it's the last thing I ever do."

People can get pornography down to a science though. So it counts...I think.

Sadly though it's still very subjective as to what you would call damn fine pornography, so it's kind of a philosophy of an art, in that no one individual can accept all that tennants of highly reasoned pronography, it's an art because it has to try and break the norm and at the same time apeal to the zietgeist, now there are mainstays in porn - which I wont mention but we all know there are just certain inalienable somewhat objective givens but they aren't proven by scientific replication of research, it's a dynamic industry and there are no overarching principles - suffice to say they don't float everyones boat, so we have to go with the idea that the greatest thinkers of the modern age in porn are artists trying to fit there art into the mainstream whilst not denying the more "cult" areas.:D

Sakuhnder, that Onion article is brilliant, I think the Onion has sarcasm down to a fine art

Realy, is the discussion on pornography against the CFC forum rules? :hmm:.

Yeah sorry I was being flippant you're right, no more pornography discussions. Let's stick to science please, keep it clean everyone, we're on borrowed time otherwise. Thanks CivGeneral.

I believe a discussion of the topic is O.K. (but somewhat off-topic for this thread). Pornography is both a huge, legal industry and a controversial issue.

A new thread would be more appropriate for such discussions.
