What's up with the Hoplite?

A little rude aren't we?

Anyway, I appreciate what Bite has done as a forum member and when I see someone slam him for no good reason, I feel it is my business.

Either back up your smack talk or retract the statement. Capiche?

Jealous nerd-rage?

They should bring back strategic resource copper so that the Hoplite advantage can be possibly removed by the possibility of not having the required resource to build it.

Hey, hey!

We all appreciate it. So there's some typos, no biggey. It's a lot of information. Nobody's slapping anybody in the face. Both of you guys back down.

I didn't get all bent out of shape when people got all, "Duh, didn't you follow the link buried in the vague reply to your first post, you moron!"

Um, maybe that's not what they said, but anyway, the point is, let's all play nice.

Your the one being rude, arioch's site is the best source for information, we all appreciate bite's continued efforts on supplying forum go-ers with information, but his list isn't as complete or as correct, based mostly on the fact that bite hasn't seen as much in-game footage and screenshots, its not a slap in his face, just the truth as im sure he understands.

Just settle down okay.

So what tech do I need to build Hoplites? Do we know that yet?

Bronze Working, they replace spearmen.

Well, if you mean me, then no. I'm not jealous of anyone who compiles information about ciV. I am most appreciative of both Bite and AriochIV for their hard work. However, when I see one of the two insult the other's work for no apparent reason, I took exception to that, asked for an explanation and got a snotty answer in response. Meh.

Helmling, check out Arioch's site, there's a picture of the full tech tree, albeit probably not the finalized one.

No one was insulting anyone, till you butted in, arioch merely said that bites list wasn't as factual as his, it wasn't meant or taken for an insult. You just jumped the guna bit there, but you're forgiven.

The "confirmed" features thread has a ton of errors in it.

Here's a screenshot:

Seems like a slap in the face to Bite. Care to elaborate?

See what I mean?

Anyway lets let bygones be bygones and stick to the topic on hand.

I'm wondering if the hopolite has a nifty ability like some of the UU's.

The Hoplite already has an absolutely massive strength advantage over a standard spear. It would be pretty unbalancing for them to have added advantages on top of that.

I imagine that the reason why the Leigion is only 18% stronger than a sword is because they have other advantages, where the Hoplite is 29% stronger than a spear.

I think the Immortal will have other advantages, as it has the same base unit as a Hoplite, but only a 14% increase in strength. That smaller increase will likely be offset by some other form of advantage.

He didn't say that at all. He said Bite's site had a ton of mistakes. He certainly could have used a lot more tact than that in my opinion.

However, I've said my piece, so I'll leave it at that.

Greece looks good and should be a lot of fun to play.

He didn't even say that. He said bite's list has errors on it. He made no implication of his own list, which also has had errors on it, as well as plenty of guesses from Arioch himself.

Point is, neither list is complete or likely error-free.

Point is, this is completely stupid.

Maybe you could let Bite decide whether he is offended by my choice of words, and mind your own business.

Well all I can say is, BOOM! You got served a plate on OWNED right there.

Now how about you go and mind your own business Thormodr.

I know technically I'm not even following my own advice but all I can say is, "When I see someone slam AriochIV for no good reason, I feel it is my business. Despite the fact that Arioch said some hurtful things about my ability to guess correctly."

Let's not throw fuel on the fire here. It's a pointless argument that started from a misunderstanding.

I'm thinking the Legionnaires main advantage which people seem to neglect is their ability to build forts. You could push an enemies front back just enough to capture a city then use your legionnaires to build a impenetrable front of forts without the risk of losing, or even sacrificing the time of your few workers.

Yeah that would be a cool strategy to come from the UB of the UU. Also building roads can give you the ability to create temporary supply lines to your front which could be several tiles away and speed to the front line with new units could be essential to holding a line, all this can be done without diverting and risking workers.

P.s nothing wrong with a little fire ;).

(Notice that I'm pretending the last half-page or so of posts isn't there. :p)

Meh, I think copper's kind of pointless without Axemen in the game. It may help balance out Hoplites (we'll see how they play out as-is) but for all other civs, all it would give them is an anti-other-strategic-resource-consuming-unit. Since most civs' spears seem pretty much only there to take on cavalry, limiting them further with a strategic resource seems unnecessary.

I never really liked copper, I always went for Iron if I had the choice, copper was inferior and only useful for rushing what axes before you could discover Iron, i'm glad the %bonus vs melee axemen guys are out too, I really didnt like them, they made attacking someone so much harder, you occasionally had to wait till knights/rifles if they got spears and axes quick enough

If you had gold and no iron or bronze, you should be able to make golden weapons. We should be able to improvise, even if it's ******** expensive.

I'm curious what the best use of the Hoplite/Companion combination will be. If a Greek player beelines Bronze Working, then does the same for Horseback Riding, they'll have a lot of time to build up veteran Hoplites while waiting on Companions to get researched/built. I'd guess that ancient Greek armies will be mostly Hoplites with Companion as support; possibly, a small number (<5) Companion will rush ahead to disrupt defensive formations while the main Hoplite line marches up, or the two stay together until engaging the enemy, where the Hoplites hold the line and the Companion flanks.

Seems like a very powerful one-two for the Greek player, and something I'd rather not be on the receiving end on.
