What's Your Favorite Wonder...to RAZE???

When someone has gone to the trouble of building The Great Lighthouse and Colossus in one city. Oooh, ain't that pretty. BLAM BLAM!

What! Sounds like something I'd keep. ;)

Hmm, outside of the AP/UN/rival corporation/stopping someone from winning, I still can't see the point of razing perfectly good cities besides spite. I mean, usually I declare war to gain useful cities and land. Their loss and my gain. And burning down a developed city only to have to settle a new one, or worse yet, a 3rd party settles some land nearby seems to defeat the purpose of declaring war in the first place. You're tossing hundreds if not thousands of hammers your opponent spent for you down the drain.

I guess spite's sometimes a good reason...

Well, maybe if you're trying to finish off the game, but otherwise...

I agree. I can't remember the last time I razed a city that had a wonder. The AP I'd have to think about. However, if I'm close to the AP city I probably already have that as my state religion so I'm not in much danger from the AP. Razing it would probably cost hammers from my temples.

Besides, I like it if the AI spends 1000's of hammers for my benefit.

I razed the confucian shrine once and it was on multiplayer. Sometimes the AP especially when there are "stop the war on" resolutions.

If you capture the city with the AP, you might as well keep it, right?

Depends on how many cities you have with the AP religion. If you're already in that religion, keep it. If you control or will control it shortly, keep it. If that's your first city with the AP religion, consider razing. If you don't control it, there's a problem. A couple of players have captured a city with the AP Religion in it and then lost the game to an AP diplo. Yes, war success can lose you the game! You might be the last civ without the AP religion - if you're taking the city spreads the AP religion to all Civs, diplo victory becomes available.

The AI isn't smart enough to actively pursue an AP diplo but it might win it accidentally. Heck, I've won an accidental AP victory. So did Orion, who did some old noble guides.

This is why everybody loves razing the AP.

All other wonders I'm more than happy to capture and use. Stonehenge or Pyramids are very nice to capture from the fool that built them. I don't raze holy cities because of multiple diplo hits (-5 IIRC) and I can get the shrine gold.

I love shrine gold. Once I've conquered a holy city, the monastery *in that city* is demolished because of the conquest; any culture-producting buildings go bye-bye. I usually have built various monasteries of various faiths before Sci Method, for the science bonus, so spreading the new religion domestically is usually possible.

Cheapest way to get a holy city: Shaka and I (as Saladin) had ganged up on Isabella, who had founded both Hinduism and Judaism in Madrid. I took a few cities, and let Shaka go for Madrid. It'll cost him most of his troops, and he'll be a little less likely to turn on me later. He conquers it, but doesn't much of anything in it. I was pumping out culture (since I was going for a cultural victory) and slowly but surely, my culture encroaches on Madrid. 30 or so turns later, Madrid flips to me. :D

I'll take any Holy City (If I don't care about making money of them), the AP, or the UN.

You don't want to know which holy city I raze on a regular basis. I usually have a stack of suicide troops just waiting for it to appear.

I like to raze the christian holy city too.

I dislike razing holy cities. It can really mess up your diplo and you lose the chance at a later shrine. I really don't see the point of razing holy cities aside from personal reasons. The Civs that follow that religion might not be my friends, but I don't want to annoy them more than necessary (until it's time to kill them).

The main reason for razing later holy cities is to prevent the passive spread of that religion. If you already have a religion that you are trying to spread around to get everyone onside with you, the last thing you'd want is for some other guy to spread his.

Take. It. Out. Fast.

i suggest everyone play a game where they only raze cities. its like the No Wonders game, it gives you some perspective. razing a city can be both fun, and a good strategic choice. for example: burn the cities to the ground cause they are too far away to take on early in the game. let your neighbors settle the land and take on financial woes. then come take the new cities from them later.

I don't do this, because, it makes 'Free Religion' less effective.
I prefer to have missionaries coming across the border and me gaining an extra happiness from it.
7 happiness per city? Who wouldn't want that?

I play with Diplomatic Victory off, so, the cheesy AP win can't happen, for me or the AIs.
I usually, don't burn any wonders, though, Utenlok's post is along the lines, of what, I was just thinking.

'Always War' game, epic or marathon speed.
Human players can't build wonders and must destroy any city with a wonder.
Holy cities are not considered wonders in and of themselves.
Does sound like a fun challange.

By that time, religions are pretty much set. There won't be that much spread to cause more than one AI to switch, if that. Besides, I like to have one heathen, either to conquer or to get diplo points for phony war. I consider the gold more valuable and, as plasmacannon pointed out, I might want to switch to free religion. I often don't, but how I handle religion varies from game to game depending upon diplomacy.

The Great Lighthouse, all the way.

Every time i try to build it, I get beaten to it by under 5 turns. It pisses me off to such an extent that I spend the next thousand years or so conquering it's city so I can burn it to the ground. [pissed]
