With CivIII and the first few months of CivIV, I always picked random names for the leaders I played, stuff like Willy Loman or Katie Couric, to distinguish games from each other. I went with Louis' original name one time, and the next game I played was Louis again so I used the name "Louis XV". I haven't been able to stop doing this since. My name is always the leader or some nickname ("Freddy") and the numeral of how many times I've played that leader. This is great for being able to tell which games are which and keeps me aware of how frequently I've used each leader. I started a game with "Mao V" today.

I'm always distracted by what people call themselves in their games when they post screenshots. So what name do you use when you play? Do you always use the same thing, or how do you pick it?

I always use fun insults as my leader name. Stuff like "bastard", "you little b!tch", etc. That way you get a good laugh everytime another leader asks for something -

"Can you help out a friend in need, you pig f*cker?" ...but that's just how my warped little mind works.

Well now I use your system, I like it :)

Previously I would use some combination of Shawn and their name. Such as Shawn Capac, Shawnius Caesar, Shawnzuma, etc etc.

Oh yeah, love to change the names, and I go further, making the whole civ different. Once I was playing a civ with blue as its color, so I was Papa Smurf, and the civ was the Smurfs, etc.

If I play an orange civ, well you know it's the Tennessee empire and the adjective is Volunteer or Vol. I've been Davy Crockett, Smokey, Alvin York....

i leave it to default if i can or its

So you all have raised two new questions for me. How do you change the default name? Mine is "Admin" and it makes my eyes bleed (so I never use it). And for those of you that always use the same name, how do you distinguish between your games? I mean, if I had two games running concurrently, I'm called Lucy in both, and I save with the default file name, I don't know which one I saved in AD400 and which I saved in BC3000! Surely you don't load the game to check?

the latest game is the one on the top.

I usually name the game after the day I started--"28 Jan 07" for example. It's ugly in the game conversations, but it helps me see the historical trajectory of my development (or lack thereof, as is currently the case--I'm on a long losing streak at Monarch difficulty).

You set your name right at the beginning when picking all of your options. You can also change it in game by hitting [ESC] then [Your Details]

Right, but at the beginning it defaults to Admin. Can I change that?

It uses your computer name doesn't it? So change that and you should have it.

In the game options go to tab 'other' - profilename >create new profile.
In file civilizationIV.ini I have set:
;Determines which user profile is loaded on game start
UserProfile = ChinaBlue

And ChinaBlue is the name I pick for every leader btw.
To distinguish several games running at same time I create separate folders for those saves
named after the real leader name.

To keep track how much I've played each one I keep the initial files. With HoF mod it can create first turn saves for you like this:
Isa_Nob_Sta_Fra_Epi_Anc_4000-BC_Tem_Low_Jan-29-2007_12-15-21.
Leader, level, mapscipt, speed etc. all in one line, nice feature!

hi there. i use my name combined with a special title of the civ i played. like : xxx khan when i play mongol, tsar xxx when i play russia etc. the aim is to distinghuish between safegames

i never use my default name since i go back and forth between games, i don't tend to play just one til it's over.

my names always have a K, or they're always Grizelda (in honor of the bestest dog ever), or one of the zillion nicknames i had for her. she was a Lhasa Apso, so i rename my civ to be the Tibetan ButtKickers (TBK for short) since of course that's not really what Tibet is known for, so it makes me giggle.

I share the computer with my kids, who also play, so to distinguish my games, I used to make my name some variation of Dad, depending on the civilization I was playing (Daddy-o, Daddius, Herr Dadd, Dadsa Musa, etc).
Now I'm taking some advice posted here and letting all the game variables be randomized, so I don't even know which Civ I'll be leading. So naturally I'm Random the Great. The next game I will probably be Random II. Sounds like the start of a great dynasty!
