what's your view on MUSIC COVER VERSIONS

Dream Theater's cover for Master of Puppets was absolutely fantastic. Some argue that its actually better than Metallica's original version.

It is amazing I agree, but it isn't better than the original. Although I laugh everytime I listen to it when they mess up the lyrics of the last verse. Their cover of that album is great. Now if only they'd do Justice.

Can we include samples we like? I.E. "Through The Wire" by Kanye West samples Chaka Kahn "Through the Fire"

I like it
well, lets call it a VERY tentative yes.
just ask yourself:
1-is it just a sample or a true blue remake or cover of the original?
2-is it just the hook thats used, or is it a new interpertation?
3-is the melody used as the basis for a new tune?

basically im NOT PRO sampled tracks n this thread, but if you feel its something special....
by all means, recommend it.
but if we wont allow sampled stuff, we ban James Brown, dont we? :D

so here are a few covers done by the Godfather himself  and other noteworthy funkateers.

James Brown & Dee Felice Trio - Sunny (yes, the Boney M classic)

Jungle Brothers _ SOUL POWER (Jungle Funk Mix) (James Brown original)

Ramsey Lewis - Back In The U.S.S.R. (elton jhon original)

Quincy Jones - Summer In The City (Joe Cocker?)

Sammy Davis jr.- Johnny Shaft (Isaac Hayes :worship: )

Light My Fire - Shirley Bassey (doors)

Doors - Alabama song (Kurt Weill Original)

ella fitzgerald - sunshine of your love (popular)

julie driscoll - season of the witch (more than a zillion covers)
Dr Jhon - season of the witch (so here are just two)

Lots o' good covers, I like it when the musicians bring something to the music. I hate when covers are just the original song done poorly. I've blocked most of those out of my mind though (did M Carey do a cover of a R Plant song recently... or was that a nightmare).

Ones I like:

Almost goes without saying but Hendrix doing 'All along the watchtower' is an all time great.

Guns N' Roses covered Aerosmith's Moma Kin, a great song and done well if quite similar to the original.

Limp Bizkit did a cover of Faith, by G Michael, I thought it was pretty funny (on Three Dollar Bill Y'all). The original is a great tune too (Yes, I like some G Michael - don't judge me cause I'm beautiful)

Most of the tunes on Chant Down Babalon are worth hearing (hip hop/rap covers of Bob Marley) but especially Rebel Music performed by Krayzie Bone. These aren't exactly covers because they heavily utilize direct sampling. Chuck D doing survival is nice too.

What can you say about early Zep? A lot of that was sort of cover's, great stuff though.

STP did a cover of Dancing Days, that was pretty cool. The Rollins Band covered Four Sticks too. Those are both Zep tunes in case you don't know.

Finally, somewhere I have a disk of the London Metropolitan Orchestra covering a bunch of Hendrix tunes with assorted rock stars (Sting, Santana, Taj Mahal, Buddy Miles, Bootsy Collins, Steve Vai, etc.). I'll have to dig that up and listen again.

Wow! This thread is getting complex quick.

@ Whomp: "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks remade by Van Halen ~ Now that would be something to behold! Sounds grindin'!

Here are two songs I'd like to expand on:

Summer In The City by Quincy Jones ~ KOOL & THE GANG!!! They did by far the sweetest version after Quincy Jones did. They released many versions of this with a very high pitched, distinctive keyboard. They then spun it out into "Summertime", which then got covered by Will Smith as the Fresh Prince with Jazzy Jeff. Songs within songs man :crazyeye: .

Light My Fire by The Doors ~ I have many versions of this which also include Shirley Bassey, The Doors, but also Booker T & The MGs (same guys who did 'Green Onions'), Delroy Wilson (Reggae), King Tubby (Dub Reggae vershun), I think there is also a Bill Withers version somewhere in my collections, I can certainly imagine his voice singing it quite clearly.

The ultimate sample has to be "The Funky Drummer" on that James Brown album I posted in Cover Art. That's the roots of all our dance music these days. That was the primordial break beat which the hip-hop, R'n'B, sometimes Disco, certainly Jungle and Drum 'n' Bass, Garage, Gabba, Speed Garage etc etc etc. All these musical forms sought their inspiration from that one break beat. Gotta give praise!

There is also a great reggae cover of the Kool & The Gang song "Can't Get Enough of that Funky Stuff", except that is called "Can't Get Enough of the Collie Stuff" [pimp].

I think "Yesterday" is the most covered song in music history right?

Easy Star All Stars has made a cover of the whole Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd) album called Dub Side of the Moon. Dub and reggae, gives a new outlook on the original album, that's (of course) very good.
"Da lunatic is on da grass" gets a new meaning. :smoke:

The Cardigans made a cool cover of Black Sabbath's Iron Man. What, heavy metal? This is a cocktail party!

Einstürzende Neubauten made a cool cover of Nancy Sinatra's Sand.

Faith No More did a good cover of Black Sabbath's War Pigs
Alice Donut also covered this song with a trombone playing the vocal line (not as bad as it sounds)
Snuff, a UK pop-punk band have done many zany covers (some of them also featuring a trombone), including By the Rivers of Babylon, I Think We're Alone Now, Don't Fear the Reaper as well as TV ads Bran Flakes, Shake and Vac :crazyeye: and TV themes The Likely Lads, In Sickness and in Health
And not to forget bands like The Detroit Cobras and The Dirtbombs whose stock-in-trade is breathing life into "forgotten" soul classics.
I'll probably post more as I think of them.

I have a cool cover of Sympathy for the devil by a guy who calls himself The King. As the name suggests he's kind of a Elvis-impostor. The song is quite cool, IMHO, he puts way more power into this song than the Stones...pretty funny.

The Residents has a lot of cool covers, mostly old Elvis and rock songs. Their sometime collaborator Snakefinger made a good cover of The Model.

Covers can be good.when done by decent rock bands of course. When i hear pop bands doing covers I always think NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I like Marilyn Manson's 'personal jesus' (depache mode) and 'sweet dreams' (eurythmics).

Marilyn Manson has done some rather good covers :goodjob:

- Sweet Dreams (are made of these) - most excellent!!
- Tainted Love - hot goth chicks in the video :whipped:
- Personal Jesus - Just rocks.

Nirvana have done some good ones as well, as mentioned by other posters.

Placebo and David Bowie doing 20th century boy (on greatest hits Placebo DVD) - very good!

Tainted love video is great. Not only does it have really hot goth chicks in hottubs, but it takes the piss out of american college parties.:goodjob:
Havent heard the placebo cover of 20th century boy, but i like there other stuf, so its probably good to.

Oh, and for sampling old music into new pop songs: they should be banned. Crazy frog and akon have helped support my case that remixing parts of songs into new ones does not make them cool.

PS @ Ram: Yesterday is the most covered song ever yep.

I think that Marilyn Manson's "Personal Jesus" is ok, but nothing special. To me it's too similar to the original. :)
i quite disagree with that.
what manson did to DM in this cover is similar to what he did to that Tate woman, back in the day.

but adding those NIN riffs sold LOADS of that single, so he mustve done something good there.

One of the finest cover versions in the history of mankind...
Killdozer's version of Don McLean's American Pie
In fact, the whole album For Ladies Only is made up of excellent cover versions, but there's a real magic about American Pie.

And Sid Vicious's version of "My Way."
Yeah that did occur to me after posting about "Come on Everybody" but I simply couldn't be bothered.

How about - "I Shot The Sheriff" - Clapton, Marley and who else? loads right?

Ones I like :

Both the Jimi Hendrix and Dave Mason covers of All Along the Watchtower

Metallica's cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Tuesday's Gone
and Blue Oyster Cult's Astronomy.

The Who's version of Summertime Blues.

Wasp's version of the Who's The Real Me.

Van Halen's version of Marvin Gayes' Dancing in the Streets.

Red Hot Chili Pepper's version of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground.

"Breadfan" - Metallica (original by Bungie) - AWESOME!!

"Silly Putty" - Primus (original by Stanley Clark) - The cover might be better than the original, which was already great.

"Little Wing" - Stevie Ray Vaughan (original by Jimi Hendrix) - I like Stevie's version a little better, as he did it as an instrumental.
