I'm quite aware of what the world thought of us Irish a few hundred years ago. But that's completely different. What you're asking right now is; when will one ethnicity be considered a part of a completely different ethnicity... in the year 2007, not 1807.

The Irish were regarded as a completely different ethnicity...anyway intermarriage between "whites" and hispanics will eventually make them view each other as part of the same group. Thats why I said in two generations.

That doesnt even make sense...Are southern Europeans not considered White here because they are usually a darker shade?

As far as I'm concerned Latinos with a mainly European ancestry are white.

I don't know when, but i advocate this.

on aside: my state is planning on passing a law that says if you are an illegal immegrant (read mexican) that even if you have a child on US soil, your baby will ALSO be an illegal immigrant.

Well I would say the 1/2 of them who self-identify as white on the census want to be considered white at least.

It seems like the ones who have lost any trace of an accent already are being considered white. It seems like accents are the big thing, but once you sound like an american, you are an american.

I see a great number of historical parallels between the current Hispanic population and the Italian-American populations of yore. Italians back in the day weren't considered whites back in the day as well and Italians didn't consider themselves to be white (in the American definition of white anyway)

So I would like to believe that the assimilation that occurred to the Italians will happen to the Hispanics and Hispanic culture is going to be reduced to corny 'mama mia!' jokes in a few decades from now. But how would this happen? Maybe a nationalist war, or maybe what is needed is the Hispanic population moving in with whites in suburbs like the Italians of yore had done. But whatever the case, the point is Hispanic population have some advantages that other populations and demographics at present simply do not have.
