I preordered the deluxe edition from Steam
my brother did the same :)

I have no problem with steam, or any other DRM.....I would be buying it on release day IF I had high speed internet. The tied to the game updates and patches are the sale killer for me, not because I don't like them, but because they are impossible on dialup.

I've been reading that there will be a 1 gig download from Steam when you first start your game up. That's going to exclude alot of people, myself included. Although I have broadband I use a wireless network with limited bandwidth, and 1 gig is way over my maximum allowed. That pretty much makes buying a retail version of the game a farce. You're not buying the game, just the installer. They may as well just go through Steam completely instead of trying to delude the public.

What's wrong with Steam?
I bought Empire Total War and haven't had any problems with it or anything.

And I will pay for extra stuff if it's released, like civs and things, as long as they interest me, and I feel that the 2 bucks is worth it. Why not? Someone had to program it and animate the leaderheads, and test it, balance it, etc. Why should there efforts be free?

Why do people believe they are owed anything?

Don't blame me. I'm trying my best to have a civil discussion, but I can only put up with so much abuse.

I have no doubt it will be a very good game, but I'll buy it a few days after release date to wait and see if there are any major bugs or installation/performance issues.

My fiance will buy it for me on the first day or release.
I am in a similar position., The family has already been asking when release date is and it is close enough to my birthday for their scheming purposes. They even know about Steam and the DLC and I don't have to make that purchase decision. I'd probably balk about the DLC. They don't have the same qualms.

So, I just have to wait and Civ 5 will happen. I love it.

I vowed 4 yrs ago to never do business with steam again...and I still haven't and won't.

Sure u have few problems when initially buying the game...wait a few months down the road when your PC glitches or u havn't played the game in a while and your game will not start. Steam will not help u get your version running agiain. If u need to re download you better have your credit card reciepts and info to send them, if u can even get ahold of anybody to help u that far.

Be very wary of company that you cannot telephone directly. You can send them e-mails endlessly and they will ignore u endlessly. Unless u decide to rebuy the game then they will help u of course...

If everyone boycotts steam no more games will be released via steam...simple solution.

I'll wait awhile, probably up to a year. Let the first patches come out, read the forums and see what folks say about the gameplay and how the Steam thing is working. And most importantly, let the mods get under the hood and see what they do.

I didn't get IV until Warlords and its first patch came out, and I don't feel I missed anything by not playing Vanilla.

I don't know what I will do. I usually go by reputation when it comes to waiting for patches or not. CIV had issues with memory leaks but that was mostly performance, other bugs were small enough that they didn't bother me.
As such I might very well buy it on release day, I checked other though bc simply put, I don't plan that far ahead in time. It will depend on what I'm currently doing at the time, where I am and my economical situation.

I voted day of release because there was no option of buying within 2 or so weeks of release.

I know I shouldn't buy Civ V because Civ III was one of the worst purchases I ever made, same as MOO III. Then I had problems with Civ IV. You would think I have lernt my lesson for Civ V. I blame Civ III and MOO III more on myself and hyping the game up, and expecting so much that I was so disapointed with the game. Civ IV sucked because Firaxis lied, YES they lied to us about what the specs needed to play the game. So I will wait 2 weeks after release and see how smoothly the game plays for people. Also if I can't buy the game at the store, I will not get the game. From what I read there is no price difference from buying the game online without any paper box and manual and buying the game in a store with a paper box and manual. I thought getting things on the internet were suppose to be cheaper because of lack of paper. I see no difference at all.

I am a bit confused with all alot of people saying they will not buy the game because of steam. If I am reading these comments correctly, are these people saying you can only purchase Civ V on Steam only and not in stores like EB Games, Gamespot or Wallmart?

I'll wait for Steam to actually work on my computer.

It freezes when trying to update.

I contacted Steam support, but their advice didn't help. I didn't try all of it, as some was stupid (delete all anti-virus programs completely:confused:, not just turn them off temporarily).

Geoff.
