I just installed Windows XP last night to be able to play Civ IV, so I don't know how to navigate yet. How do you find out what driver versions you have on your system? I last updated the video drivers in Feb and I had to reinstall the sound card drivers after installing XP using the disk that came with my system. My system is on the low end as it is a Dell Dimension 4300 1.6 mhz, with 512 meg ram, 64 meg Geforce 2MX video card, Turtle Beach sound card and 40 gig hard drive. I was able to install and play civ 4 with some troubles. Beginning movie was choppy and the wonder movies I didn't even try to watch. I just clicked through them. But I was able to play. Any help would be appreciated. I am planning on buying more ram and a different video card, but after having to lay out $150 for the game and Win XP, I will have to wait a little bit.

Hmm not sure what to say you gonna get choppin video and audio on that GF 2 card and prob wont last long playing the game.

I had GF4 MX440 with 64mb along with 81.85 patch, it seem to do okay but the video/audio (movie) wasnt so great and yes it was choppy. Also while in game the menu option (ESC) was flashin/flickerin barely could read it.

I just switched back to my newer card wish i was having problems with it when i playing Rome:Total War, and now with that new patch 81.85 it seem to fix the problems. Back then i only had to use 53.xx driver it was the only driver that will work for 3D games.

Anyway you prob want to get another video card, this one is cheap but better than nothing. I think i paid less than $100 for it and its GeForce FX 5200 with 256mb the movie/sound play smooth in Civ4 and i had the graphic setting highest and seem to run smooth.

You might wanna wait til patch come out first before buying a newer video card.

Here the web site for your card... www.nvidia.com

I was able to play for over 2 hours last night with no problems other than the wonder movies not playing. I am not sure if I will update drivers or not since it is running. I have read in other threads that with older cards, the older drivers seem to work better for them. My system did a lot of updating after installing XP, so I just wanted to find out if it automatically updated the drivers. I did see in another thread about where in DXDIAG to look to see what driver versions are on the system, so my orginal question is answered.

Besure to read the following details if the patch will support your card if not roll back your driver on control panel --> device driver sections.

It wouldnt hurt to get a better card, even if you get that GeForce FX it will be obsolute soon. So some of the top of the line are expensive as hell. I wanted to play TESIV:Obilivion when it come out but i wont. That RPG take up a monsterous PC to run it.
