Where's my pointer?

I have the latest patch (1.52) and now my pointer just stops working! I can still sort of do things such as save exit, but then my pointer has gone from the desktop! I have no alternative but to re-boot! This happens after about 20 turns and is really annoying. I would rather the game not work or something.
Any help or this an issue that will be covered in the next patch, whenever that will be.

I have even tried uninstalling and then re-install with the 1.52 patch. It still freezes up the pointer and I have to reboot the computer because the normal Windows pointer is not visible. I have just had to reboot 3 times in the last 25 minutes! It seems to be getting worse with each play!
I sure hope the next patch will sort this out as I won't be getting the Expansion pack if not!

Does anyone have any views on this? I have had to reboot 12 times today already. The shortest play time was 3 units moved! Its getting really stupid.

Have you tried right-clicking on your desktop? Sometimes my pointer disappears, though not because of CIV, and doing this brings it back. It will save you from having to reboot your computer at any rate.

how bout your mouse drivers?
what mouse do you use. I used to have this problem with my kensington mouse before i installed their drivers and not the standart windows ones

I have this problem ONLY when I am playing Windows Media Player while playing Civ4. The game continues to play, the Media Player is playing, and the cursor, both Civ4 and regular Windows cursor is on the screen, but stuck. I can move around the mouse and the mouse focus moves.... its like my cursor is having an "out of desktop" experience. Only fix is to reboot.

So you think its the mouse drivers?

whats the company that made your mouse? I think that kensington mice are uncompatible with the normal mouse drivers that windows provides. Either install the kensington ones if you have a kensington mouse, or just install the ones that came with your mouse.

I was wondering about the mouse itself, too. Its an HP mouse using Microsoft ps/2 drivers. I have not searched yet for a driver FOR THAT SPECIFIC mouse, if one exists.

What intriques me is that it only occurs if I run Media Player at the same time as Civ4. I wonder if its a memory issue? I have 3G of RAM, but it may be about allocation of memory.

Any thoughts on that?

Okay, in case anyone is needing this info..... I looked around the web and found this problems occuring APPARENTLY because of the video driver, Nvidia drivers to be exact. Rolling back to an earlier version helped, but I have not checked to see if Nvidia has a NEWER driver that may address this. It looks like Nvidia has come out with a NEW driver update last month...early February, and its notes have many mentions of mouse weirdness in games. I will give it a try.

Turning on "Mouse trails" can help when the cursor freezes but the mouse is still working... so you can more easily find the mouse focus without the actual screen cursor.

it might have something to do with video drivers i noticed too but what was weird that it completely stopped when i installed the manufacturers drivers. And i have an old geforce mx 4000 on the computer where this was happening

I really don't think it's the mouse driver at fault.
I'm experiencing exactly the same problems, although I sometimes can't even load up an ongoing game without the pointer going AWOL - and sometimes it goes after a couple of turns.

To clarify the problem. A pointer is still visible on the screen, but it is non moving. But the system is still tracking the mouse as features still work as normal (highlighted buttons, the screen scrolling).
To add insult to injury, the pointer will change while the system is busy with the AI (so it's not totally static). The damned thing just won't move.

once I have escaped back into my desktop, the windows cursor has also vanished. although again, something is still tracking, highlighting icons and buttons. And it's a case of switch off and restart.

I have tried uninstalling/ reinstalling Civ (fixed an annoying glitch in the wonder movies :) , but not the mouse. Sigh!)
I have updated the driver for my video card (Geforce 5500), and updated to build v152.

I think it might be a memory problem as I have exited into windows and found my memory down to 6% (of 1Gb) . So I turned down all the video setting to low, Still no joy!!!

So I'm Kinda out of ideas, anybody got any suggestions? :(

I just complained about this problem in this thread.

It's happening to me occasionally on Warlords. It's exactly like what kwazy wabbit described. I never encountered it on vanilla or when running any other games/programs, so I don't think it's anything to do with my video card or mouse driver.

Any way to fix this?

Wow, you really like looking through the back pages dont you?

No, I encountered this problem and decided to search the forum for threads on mouse issues. Turns out others have complained about the same problem. Unfortunately, there seems to be no tangible solution or any response from Firaxis.
