Which AI will DOW you when they are already at war?

I thought the answer to this thread's title was "none", but it looks like after so many years this game can still surprise me. Today Monty was at war with China and he still DOW'd me.

So... what the hell?? I had never seen this before, and I have been playing Deity for a while now. Anyone knows which leaders will DOW you when they are already at war?

Actually, I don't know the code the behind it, but the one time it happened to me it was Monty as well - and, yes, I recall being quite surprised by it. I never had anyone else DOW me ever while otherwise engaged. I only recall that happening once, although obviously all the right pieces have to be in place. Interestingly, I don't recall this subject being discussed before nor any related coding behind it.

For anything related to AI declaration of war check out any contributions by DanF in the thread

it's really old but still should hold true.

The thread has the following from DanF regarding the OP's question:

WHEOOHRN does NOT prevent an AI from switching to WARPLAN_PREPARING_LIMITED after the refusal of one of their demands. Likewise there is nothing that keeps the AI from opening a second front while still being busy in the other war. In a test game I bribed my favorite neighbor Monty (modded to CONTACT_DEMAND_TRIBUTE = 1; iDemandRebukedSneakProb = 100) into a war vs. poor Lizzy. Unsurprisingly, Monty demanded a tech from me in the very next IBT (btw. they never demand monopoly techs). Instead of giving him the tech I provided him with a couple of Modern Armors via WB which promptly entered my cultural borders after some turns of "war preparation" had elapsed. He was still at war with Lizzy at that time!

Thanks georgjorge. It looks like every example we have is with Monty, I guess I'll have to be ready for this stuff coming from him in the future. And in my case I had refused a tribute request from him too.

That could help explain it a bit, the whole refuse demand thing. I'm pretty sure I did some like that in my case. However, reading between the lines there I suspect there is more too it, like a combination of factors including refused tribute, power rating, etc.. Someone like Monty is always going to have a lot of units sitting around anyway, although surprisingly he is not in the top tier unitprob.

If's funny when you see something like this happen and then you see cases where an AI, even Monty, will sit in fist mode for eons before dow-ing anyone.

@DrCron: The reason you don't see two wars from an AI at once more often is probably tied a lot to power rating. When comparing power rating, an AI will subtract (or is it divide?) the power of its enemy from its own. So an AI fighting another decently powerful AI will need a LOT of units to consider fighting you, even if you by yourself have less power than him.

i've had it happen before with charlemagne, too, after i refused a demand. Its not just monte who will declare when he's already at war...

The 2 Ai most likely to demand a tribute are Monty and Napolean. Both rated 10/10 for demand tribute on know your enemies page.

Know your enemies.

Ah, yes, this should explain it. Hardly ever there's a difference in power big enough between AIs. I guess China was weaker than I expected in my game, and I did have a very small army (I was waiting to win the Lib race to build cuirs).
