Which settings do you enjoy the most in VP, in terms of maps, speed and so on?

I tend to play standard or large size maps with a few extra civs added. I like overcrowded worlds because this breeds conflict and tension, which in turn causes wars and interesting diplomacy! I like to see cities swap hands, and a crowded world makes the initial explore and expand phase of the game extra important. It also more accurately simulates some real life politics I find: some countries will grow powerful, others remain weak and will be bullied. Sometimes I even stack the deck against peace: adding in The Huns, Romans and Mongolians will spice things up nicely.

I like continents or fractal as they give a good mix of land and water, and fractal especially is unpredictable. Recently I've played on standard but may bump up to epic to make units last a bit longer and hopefully create more meaningful wars.

Standard size terra or terra like maps (Communitu, Pangea, oval, donut) Epic speed all the way no ruins or events, raging barbs Emperor if i feel like playing a game to relax and just play or Immortal if i feel like i want a challenge.
Playing an S tier civ for the sake of it like Spain or Songhai and crushing half of the map by the medieval era is really fun

Huge Tectonic (which is huger than huge), 18-22 civs (which makes the map more crowded, but still leaves enough space for 5-8-ish cities for each civ), 20 CSes, epic speed, emperor (which still allows some roleplaying while posing enough challenge).

Espionage, tech trading, events off, ruins on. A few additional units, reshuffled tech tree and resources to make modern warfare more historically accurate, war weariness toned down and warmonger resistance (or whatever the malus your units get after warring for a while is called) removed. Science slowed down a bit (by 25% IIRC), archer line made slightly weaker, especially around Gatlings (I might revert this, the recent anti-ranged buffs to infantry seem to have solved my concerns about warfare being skewed in favor of ranged too much).

I've been playing immortal standard settings with some modded communitas map. I also reduced the dimensions of the map by 10% (so about 20% less land) to make things more tense. Tech trading/agreements and events are turned off. I also like Oval, but the AI is decent at water now so it's more fun to include plenty of it. Gotta say the game is excellent at the moment and I've found many different strategies to be viable on these settings.

Shameless copy/past with some edit.

Standard size terra or terra like maps (Communitu, Pangea, Frontier, Continents).

Epic or Standard. The most stable/balanced beta version the most i'm playing on Epic. I do not want spend dozens of hours in a game just to discover that a late game bug ruins my experience. It seems the new version is on the doorstep so I'll stick to Standard for some time being.

Ruins if i allow civs with UA on ruins (shoshone) or I'm playing one, no ruins mostly.

No Events, Raging Barbs, GG/GA on killing barbs, Transparent diplomacy

King if i feel like playing a game to relax and just play or Emperor if i feel like i want a challenge. Immortal if i'm very confident with the Civ I chose (Rome is my preferred choice, always test new patch with Rome) and only warmongering.

Warmongering is a lot easier than any kind of other game.

It seems new patch will make CV possible again.

Standard Continents (Communitas_79). Every so often I do Terra settings, I love the "New World" phase, but often don't enjoy the initial "survive the cradle" deathfest that occurs when every Civ is crammed together at start, but on occasion I just get the itch to play it.

Im always playing with these settings...
  • Standard size, Continents. 3M world age (so more mountains and hills), Cool temp, High water level, Scarce resources
  • Epic speed
  • 20 - 22 Civs
  • Tech Research Agreements enabled
  • Raging Barbs, No start Bias, Random personalities, Human vassalage enabled
I personally love crowded maps, where you can at most get 2 to 3 cities. Makes the early exploration super important, and crowded worlds, like OP said, breeds conflict, which breeds interesting diplomacy. Add in the scarce resources, and that adds even more diplomatic tension and interaction, as it becomes super important to pick your spots to grab those early scarce resources, and later on leads to interesting interaction when you need a resource from others.

Then, when you add the higher water level, that reduces the land mass a little bit more, to make it slightly more crowded. Cool temps and less world age adds a bit more mountains, lots of forests and jungle.

How do you increase tech cost ?

Now. I find most fun playing VP on Tiny map, Prince (later King or Emperor) , 4 civilization with me (8 small civs), marathon and epic and normal also, all stardart others settings. Map Continents, maybe sometimes Pangaea.

All my life from 1992 I playing mostly on Duel and Tiny maps (exept Civilization 1 of course). With 2-10 civilizations. Maximum level of difficulty was Immortal (on some Duel maps with Marathon it is possible).

1. VP mod pack
2. Emperor Difficulty (all from Chieftain to King is very Easy)
3. 3 civilization with me and 4-5 small civs.
4. Duel Map. :)
5. Continent Map
6. Epic speed.
7. High Sea level

Most fun settings. ))
