I'm surprised no one has mentioned Holst and the Planets, namely Mars, the Bringer of War given the strong war factor of Civ and Mars being one of the most famous "war themes"

I was just writing the above post, and wondering the same thing!

Brazilian: Os Sertoas

About that one,I'd change to one of the works of Machado de Assis already mentioned(Dom Casmurro and Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas),as he's the greatest writer of Brazilian Literature and because of such status,he holds bigger chances of being a Great Writer .

You're right, he will prob be included to represent Brazil, as he is widely hailed as the greatest Brazilian writer of all time, but the title of the list is ALTERNATIVE suggestions; those which no one had previously mentioned and those which I thought stand a good chance of inclusion.

Necromancy!

A work of literature I'd like to see, they've already included one of his quotes in Civ 4 so it shouldn't be a problem!

Spoiler :
"In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe; Douglas Adams

Since the Ozymandias poem is not used in Civ V (but was used earlier; Civ V defeat screen is not the same as the poem, but possibly inspired by the poem), Percy Bysshe Shelley can show up with his sister. Another plus is that the entire poem is in the public domain.

I bet they are going to put Brave New World as a great literature work.

And in music I would like to see several great Rock albums.
I'd like to see Highway 61 Revisited, Sgt. Pepper, Led Zeppelin IV, Joshua Tree and Nevermind.
That would be very cool.

How 'bout The Canon of Medecine by Avacienna, Ibn Sina, or whatever iteration of his name?

Epic of Gilgamesh (Sumerian, I believe)
Tao Te Ching (Chinese)
The Elder Scrolls (Dark Elf)
Lord of the Rings (J.R.R. Tolkien)
Lee Trevino's Putting For Idiots (Golf)
Russian Sabre Dance (Russian)
Heart of Darkness (Joseph Conrad)
Anything by Tupac (Tupac)

Exactly. I bet 90% of the great works will be Western. Which is a dissapointment in my eyes. They should research long and hard about different great works all over the world.

I bet 100% that none of the great works will be Chechen.

Music
Bach's Goldberg Variation
Palestrina's Misa Papae Marceli
Vivaldi's Violin Concerto
Handel's Messiah
Mozart's Requiem
Beethoven's 9th Symphony
Haydn's Symphony
Chopin's Piano's work

literary
Chairil Anwar's Poem as Indonesian Representative

*snip*
- The Shahnameh, Persia's national epic of sorts
- The poetry of Rumi, Omar Khayyam, and other similar medieval Iranian poets and thinkers whose names I forgot
*snip*

Yes! Definitely these! I think there should be some Great Works from Iran. Like maybe...

- The Collected Works of Hafez by Hafez (Great Writer)
- Ey Iran by Ruhollah Khaleqi (Great Musician)
- Morghe Sahar by Morteza Neydavud (Great Musician)
- Fifth Day of Creation by Mahmoud Farshcian (Great Artist)

And if I had to pick a Wonder from Iran...maybe the Azadi Tower.

Secret History of the Mongols!

A songhai empire contemporary Timbuktu writer would be Ahmad Baba al Massufi he was a very famous scholar in the late 1500 - early 1600s. though he wrote stuff stuff wad more academic not fiction, so I can't find any good single work that world suit.

a famous Nigerian writer - Chinua Achebe - just died, I haven't read him but his book: “Things Fall Apart.” is really famous.

an other Nigerian writer who is really good (which I have read) is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her book about the Biafra war: "half of a yellow sun" is really great!
Wouldn't you use Wole Soyinka?

Austria- "Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka
Netherlands- Perhaps "The Diary of Anne Frank" by Anne Frank
If you declare Kafka Austrian you will get into a lot of trouble ;) but probably it might not be necessary to assign them to any civ at all.

In my view "The Diary of Anne Frank" is not a work of literature as it was never meant for publication - it's an important historic document, of course, but probably not for ideal for game purposes.

Since all works are created by GP, can we have anonymous works like the Nibelungenlied, Beowulf or the Epic of Gilgamesh?

In Modern Times i would like to see a Great Works if they will included such as

Hey Jude from The Beatles ( Great Musician )
Rock and Roll from Elvin Presley ( Great Musician )
Through the fires and Flames from Dragonforces ( Great Musician )
Inception from Christoper Nolan ( Great Artisian )

for my country in Indonesia , Great artworks such as
Si Galigi Mawayang or "Sir Galigi played wayang"
so heres the pic
Spoiler :

Great Literature in Indonesia
Malin Kundang

Through the fires and Flames from Dragonforces ( Great Musician )

This was physically painful for me to read

Disregarding the fact that modern tunes aren't going to get in for licensing reasons, is a simplistic power metal song known mostly for being almost as difficult as a Devil Went Down to Georgia cover in the Guitar Hero video game really noteworthy enough to be included and represent metal? Is it really more important than Black Sabbath's "War Pigs", or Deep Purple's "Highway Star"? Hell, if you wanted to go with a more contemporary piece I'd still pick something from Kyuss long before the list reached Dragonforce. If the list EVER reached Dragonforce.

And though I already said it I will repeat it.

One can not simply walk past the George Gershwin's "Summer time" (from Porgy and Bess):

Link to video.

YES! (I mean no, one does not walk past it)

Link to video.

Rock & Roll - Velvet Underground - murica

This one was used for the world wonder of Rock & Roll in ... civ 4 i belive.

Link to video.

Abba - Waterloo - sweden

Link to video.

Carmen Miranda - Tico-Tico No Fubá - Brazil

Link to video.

Miriam Makeba - Pata Pata - Zulu

I see "Rock 'n Roll" by The Velvet Underground being in as a homage to Civ IV.
