Which Hollywood movie character are you?

On days where I'm wittier than average I might remind you of a young, gentile Woody Allen.* Without the fetish for much younger women.

*Except -- a spectacularly, jaw-droppingly handsome Woody Allen.

I think a lot more people would react like Upham than some of the other soldiers in that squad than would care to admit it.

:goodjob: That's why I picked Hudson, whilst the armchair brave may like to think they'd perform cooly and bravely under fire, I think more would be like those two characters when the fire started...

All this war talking reminded me of another character that I can relate to.. Hawkeye(Alan Alda) from M.A.S.H. Hates war, don't know why he is in it, but try to make the best out of the situation

I despised him too... but I figure that's pretty much how I would have acted, unless I have greater capacity for tough choices and fearsome situations than I realize.

What is wrong with your assessment is that most soldiers do not act like that. Cowards make up a very small portion of an Army. Most soldiers operate as soldiers despite fear and heat of battle.

Ah! But most people are not soldiers.

The training that soldiers undergo to become soldiers makes a BIG difference, but not everyone is cut out for that job.

I do not think that soldiers are cowards, but most average people are cowards.

Also Upham was not a combat soldier, he signed up to translate maps and read reports from germans, not shoot at them. He'd never seen combat before, he froze, that's not a coward par se, it's unfair to rate him as such.

I agree -- he was not trained or experienced enough to handle combat, which is why the others tried to keep him out of it.

He also chose to have pity on the German captive -- which eventually resulted in Capt Miller's death. I think most of us have been socialized to be merciful to our enemies -- it's part of feeling like we are good people. It takes a jaded, kind of a jerk of a person (by our stds) to make hard choices like gunning down an unarmed prisoner. I'm not the type who would do it.

My parents were terrified after watching A Beautiful Mind. Fortunately, I don't have the severe symptoms.

Besides, I don't have his Nobel Prize or a wife (like his would be nice!)

I've never met an economist that felt he deserved his Prize.

I never heard of Tomkinson's Schooldays; do you mean Tom Brown's School Days?

The bully in that yarn was Harry Flashman, later a hero of the British Empire. I wouldn't mind being him, either. (Problem is, I don't speak 9 fluent languages!)
