Laughing at the Zulu's votes. People want them in, but only as familiar antagonists to be mowed down. Kinda sums up why the Zulu are a disappointing choice given the other African options. Voted for Brazil, myself.

More than likely, Zulu are playing runner up for a lot of people in the light of the new shinies.

I know I'll still end up playing as the Zulu and enjoying myself. I obviously believe that the Zulu should have been included with a slew of African Civs, and not the only subsaharan Civ we got in this expansion.

Confirmation newness

Ha. While I can't speak for everyone else, I think Venice might be my favorite civ out of all 43.

I was a little skeptical at first with the fact that you can't settle cities, and especially considering they pretty much negate the possibility of ever having Italy. But their play style just seems so unique and fun.

If double trade routes is as powerful as I think it will be, they will be swimming in gold. I love to play economically and considering :c5gold: = :c5production: for Venice, focusing on gold won't hinder other aspects of their game. I love it.

More than likely, Zulu are playing runner up for a lot of people in the light of the new shinies.

They don't have half as many votes as the 2nd least popular civilization, and no one in this thread who listed all of their picks in order had the Zulu even in their top 5. All but one has had them in the bottom 2.

My list in the order I will play:

Venice (will eventually try all victory types)
Assyria (kinda vanilla but SO powerful)
Morocco
France (since it kinda counts)
Brazil

Possibly other reworked civs.

Bottom of my list: Shoshone. Will tinker with this civ but I doubt I will ever play a full game as them. It smacks of vanilla dlc to me.

My list of civs I think I'll like the most (a bit different from civs I find most interesting, as another thread is about):

1. Brazil - Looks like a very open civ that should be able to control the game diplomatically and have a decent shot at winning any way.
2. Portugal - Much like Brazil, but it seems a little more obvious as to the best way to play and unlikely to control the game as well.
3. Morocco - I don't care about the UU or UI, but the UA should be insanely fun.
4. Shoshone - I like the early boost, and it should set them up for a strong late game, but they're a bit bland.
5. Assyria - Why, yes, I did just take your city and Steel with it!
6. Venice - VERY interesting, but I'm not in love.
7. Indonesia - I can get faith after religions have been founded AND spread to my cities near fresh water? The UA is good for island maps...nothing else. UU may be cool, but not amazing.
8. Zulu - They can set themselves up well for a strong mid and late game with the UU and UB combo, but they are a less interesting war option than the science stealing Assyrians or the kris swordsman of Indonesia (who will also get some bonus for clearing area to settle cities on other continents.)
9. Poland - A UB that does little but give (generally poor) units more exp and a bit of cash. A UU that pushes the enemy away from my army. Meh.

Zulu is in my bottom two as well, just barely ahead of Poland. I can honestly imagine myself never using the Zulu, but it might depend on two things.

First, is it really MELEE units only, or is it all units that attack at melee range? There is a distinction between melee and gunpowder units in the game, so I can only assume the Zulu only benefit from reduced maintenance on melee units.

Second, what are these new upgrades and will they be worth getting? They current upgrades are pretty nice, so will I even feel at a disadvantage at equal tech against the Zulu, or will I be able to simply shrug it off?

I picked The Shoshone because that extra territory will be a bigger bonus than most people think. Plus the pathfinder will be an amazing unit no matter what they do to "water it down." The Comanche Raider isn't one of the best UUs, but it will be great for what I use Calvary for, and it will be beast if it keeps the +1 movement.

My Play order for BNW civs are:

The Shoshone
Morocco
Brazil
Portugal
The Zulus
Poland
Venice
Assyria
Indonesia

Ranking preference:

Venice
Indonesia
Morocco
Brazil
Shoshone
Portugal
Poland
Assyria
Zulus

Pueblo would have been higher than Shoshone, Hittites higher than Assyria, and just about any other sub-Saharan would have been higher than Zulus.

In order from favorite to least favorite (and therefore play order)

Venice
Indonesia
Porutlga
Morocco
Brazil
Shoshone (low on the list, like Brazil, but I do like their inclusion)
Assyria
Zululand
...
...
...
Poland

I shall play them in this order:

1. Venice - still have to decide between them and Poland. They seem very cool and weird to play as, definitely a hypercube! Double trade routes looks insane.

2. Poland - probably, I might switch between 1-2. I just loved the free social policies from the first announcement. Looks incredibly powerful! Also, their Winged Hussar looks cool, has a nice bonus and synergizes with the Ducal Stable, which I also liked.

3. Indonesia - I want to test out how good their UA will be. I'm also curious about the Kris Swordsman and feel like the Candi is much better than it looks like.

4. Portugal - because of reasons. I loved the Nau, and the Feitoria looks great. The UA doesn't amaze me much, but having gold is never bad. Also, I love naval empires!

5. Shoshone - they have some nice nice bonuses!

6. Assyria - conquest and techs, basically. Looks good to me.

7. Brazil - Mostly because it is my country, I have to say I'm not very amazed by this civilization in particular.

8. Zulu - you know, I actually liked them! Many warring abilities, so it means a lot of sinergy.

9. Morocco - apart from Gateway to Africa, their bonuses look boring. I might change my mind, though...

Assyria - Science + Conquest: Good for getting into a new difficulty (or higher challenge level in general) vs the AI. Probably more practical but less interesting than some of the other civs.

Brazil - Nice variety civ; Carnival looks cool so I chose this as my fav overall for now.

Indonesia - Interesting stuff, although overseas settling requires a good deal of luck, it's still cool to have a civ that gives a big bonus for doing so. The Kris Swordsman and Candi both have a fun and casual (yet powerful) feel to them, right up my alley.

Morocco - As a terrain-based civ (desert), it sounds interesting enough. The trade UA appears very powerful.

Poland - I like that the horse-focus is strong enough to warrant play in that direction. I like the idea of running lots of SPs too. If only there was a horsey branch.

Portugal - Interesting ideas that I will need to play to understand. You use the UI and wide strategy to get as much luxury diversity as possible for the UA, and the UU helps take advantage.

Shoshone - I like all of it. The free extra borders UA (clever, simple, and affects your strategy), the choose-your-hut pathfinder, and that the other UU is as modern as cavalry rounds it out nicely. Guess they'll have speedy tanks.

Venice: Quite serene indeed. It's good for being a little different, with a big focus on gold and MoV production, hopefully it will balance well and be fun to play.

Zulu: As a pure military civ, this is another one that will be good for taking on AI games that would normally be above my comfort level, as well as just being a lot of fun when feeling like playing a domination game. It will also be a lot of fun to try to get as many promotions as possible onto one unit.

well I was ready to (re)vote Brazil, but I saw Morroco and more, Indonesia. Indonesia is the more seducing, the more challenging, and the more designed BNW civ, to my opinion.
so
Indonesia, first,
Brazil
Morroco
Portugal
Venice
Poland,
Assyria,
shoshone,
Zulus

1. Indonesia - Because I'm Indonesian

2. Shoshone - Because I'm Coloradan (but unlike Indonesia, Shoshone are not across the board Coloradan hence the 2nd place)

3. Morocco - Would easily be first if not for nationalistic reasons above. My favorite civs are ones which excel in an environment that others cannot (e.g. Polynesia/Indonesia on archipelago, Brazil on jungle, Inca on mountains and hills). Desert civs are wicked fun and the whole diplomatic aspect fits my style perfectly. Just the diplomatic overhaul in general is what I look forward to most, beyond the new civs of course

4. Brazil - Brazilwood camps is aspect that intrigues me the most, of all things. Seriously

5. Portugal

6. Poland - Sixth place, yes, but a very very strong sixth place. Winged Hussar looks great and glad the massive Polish fanbase finally got what they wanted

7. Venice - I'll likely try them once, like I did with Austria, then ignore them until people around here come up with a strategy for them in which I'll one more time

8. Assyria

9. Zulu

I think the fact that BNW is tailored so much to the culture and diplomacy game is why civs like Assyria and Zulu are not more popular. Could be wrong though, just throwing it out there

I love playing economic civs. Venice seems awesome, because you really have to improvise in order to make your empire successful. You're essentially playing as a city state, which is a unique addition to the game. It'll be fun to forge a mercantile empire across the globe with trade routes and stuff.

Another one I want to play as is Morocco. I like desert civs, and the new UI will definitely make desert tiles a powerhouse, coupled with Petra. And then if you add desert folklore into the mix you'll have a major economic superpower.

1 - Morocco - I loved the Moors in Civ IV and there are few countries I find more fascinating than Morocco in real life. Most of Southern Portugal (especifically my region) and Spain still retain a huge legacy from the time the Moors/Morocco controlled it. Gameplay-wise, Morocco seems a really interesting civilization - and I love desert civs.

2/3 (goes for both) - Brazil/Portugal - personal, emotional and patriotic reasons aside (these are obviously my two favourite civs in that sense) I find both Portuguese-speaking nations very interesting. Well, the first reason being that fact - two Portuguese-speaking leaders in one EP! The other being the fact that both are showcases of two very interesting mechanisms BNW is bringing in. I'm more into the whole trade thing than the new cultural system, but I'm eager to try Brazil and see how it works. The only real fault with Brazil, for me, is their idiotic UU. Pedro II is one of the historical world leaders I admire the most and I'm dying to listen to the Brazilian theme!

4 - Zulu - Shaka's back!

5 - Indonesia - a very important country in today's world and which played a huge role in the past. Unfortunately I don't know much about her history (in detail, that is), besides its past with Portugal (both historical and - unfortunately - current, what with the invasion by Indonesia ordered by Sukarto, and the massacre of thousands of East Timoreses after the Portuguese left the island...) , so I may as well pump up civpedia and read something on Indonesia's history after I close the game.

6 - Assyria - I find it way too similar to other Ancient civs.

7 - Poland - I actually find the country interesting, and it does have a very rich history, but little appeals to me in its gameplay

8 - Shoshone - Should have been the Pueblo...

9 - Venice - Should have been Italy...

Ordered by Suharto. "Sukarto" doesn't exist as a person (hehehe)

You might be thinking of Sukarno, who was the first President. Sukarno was a great leader and never committed such atrocious acts.

Suharto was not. He was the man behind the killings

I like Poland because the extra policies almost make it a build your own custom UA Civ, that appeals to me.

I think the fact that BNW is tailored so much to the culture and diplomacy game is why civs like Assyria and Zulu are not more popular. Could be wrong though, just throwing it out there

In Assyria's case I still think it's because of boring design. They are science based like Babylon except Babylon's walls encourage defence whilst Assyria's Seige Towers encourage attack especially with tech stealing. It feels like puttign a Hunnic Warmonger attitude on a babylon base to me.

Zulu - most hard core players have given up on walking melee units and that is what Zulu specialises in. We've all played Warmonger before so both them and Assyria inherently dont feel fresh - neither does Poland but they may be scary tough so people are giving them more leeway.

1. Morocco Morocco Morocco. As others have said, the environment really excites me. And I never would normally do this, but imagine a sandstorm map with 9 Moroccos... that would be terrifyingly awesome.

2. Assyria, honestly. I like scientific civs, and when I find a civilization that can actually make me become a warmonger, then that civ is a huge success in my mind.

3. Portugal. I'm glad we finally have one of the last huge Europeans back in. I mean, we had to know they were holding out on us when we got AUSTRIA before Portugal. It should also be a good way to get to know trade routes.

4. Zulu. I'm not a warmonger, but I really do love Shaka. Isn't the rush you get when "oh no, look who's right next to me" just great?

5. Shoshone. I grew up in Boise, Idaho and actually learned a lot about the Shoshone in elementary school. When there's a 'city' called Pocatello right in your state, I suppose you have to know a little bit about the tribe.

6. Brazil. Feeling kind of meh about this one, but I love a good culture game (whether overhauled or not). I also think it will be a fun and different experience, as we finally have another modern Americas civ.

7. Indonesia. I was really quite excited for this one to come out, and I was shocked when Morocco blew me away and this civ left me vaguely unimpressed. I feel that it could have been more, but the Kris Swordsman should be interesting, I suppose.

8. Poland. I'm aware that Poland was important and the Winged Hussar actually sounds pretty interesting, but I can't really stand the idea of playing as this civ.

9.

10.

11.

12. Oh, Venice ranks waaay below 9. I'm not even vaguely interested in the idea. I suppose I'll have to get used to it. Maybe it'll be cooler based on the actual releases, whenever those come about.
