I just pick randomly for each city :crazyeye:

P.S. In the Civliopedia, it said that if a nuclear plant melts down, "all hell breaks loose". Any explanation please>

A nuclear plant has a chance to meltdown if the city riots two turns in a row, which kills a bunch of people and creates pollution IIRC.

The nuclear plant would be best because it increases production the most. The coal plant costs the least, but the pollution can be annoying. A hydro plant is cheaper than a solar plant, so is preferred if buildable. I might build coal plants in a couple of cities. I try to get Hoover's Dam if possible.

Nuke plants, as they give a better production bonus.

I haven't had a meltdown in a while, but my recollection is that you lose roughly half the city's population and you get pollution in all the tiles surrounding the city center. (I don't recall if tile improvements are destroyed or not.) Having said that, the only times I've experienced meltdowns have been when I've been in anarchy switching governments or when there's sustained resistance in a newly conquered city. (Having a meltdown in a resisting city isn't so bad, actually, since some of the population you lose will be those resisting your occupation.) So I'll build nuclear plants where I can, since aA nuclear plant doubles factory production, while the others increase it by only 50%. Remember that the city needs access to fresh water to be able to build one.

Like the other posters, I'll build the Hoover Dam if I can, although of course that doesn't help with cities on a different continent. And even with the Hoover Dam I'll probably go for nuclear plants in cities that can build them.

In cities with no fresh water, your choice is either a coal plant or a solar plant. I might build an early coal plant and then replace it with a solar plant later, to lessen the pollution. Of course, if I've built the Hoover Dam on the continent, then I'll just sell the coal plant.

4-5 cities in the core will get factories and coal plants as soon as they become available.

I sell them (i.e the coal plants) as soon as I get Hoover.

I tend to build mostly hydro plants, and Hoover Dam if I can. Otherwise I build coal plants in cities that can't have hydro power, and replace them with solar plants.

I certainly use Coal Plants most often. Horrible for the environment, I know. :yuck: But I don't like waiting for Hydro Plants. I will try to build Hoover Dam, of course, but I wouldn't build it in a city without a Factory and Coal Plant.

Nuclear plants are also good, but it's rare that the game is still close enough at that point that it makes a huge difference.

OK. If your govenor automates the city. Neuclear plant is the BEST OPTION. Cause there are no riots under guv control

Dont mind building a Hoover dam. Its practically one of the best Wonders in Civ3 belive it or not.

You get a Hydro Plant in every city river or not. AND EVEN IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER POWER PLANT. THAT PLANT DOSENT DISAPPEAR WHICH MEANS YOUR ALLOWED 2 POWER PLANTS

Wasting gpt upkeep, and adding unnecessary pollution, the 2th plant does nothing for your production.

I most mostly use hydro plants. Because I build Hoover Dam every game I play.
But in my core cities that are on a coastal square (That are producing over 50 shields) I build Nuclear plants. The reason being: so I can build naval units faster :p. But sometimes I build nuke plants in my core cities inland.

I had a meltdown in a city I captured once. I didn't bother trying to stop the rioting because I assumed it would flip soon and also, more importantly, I didn't care. It was rather cute as disasters go, then the people promptly started WLTKD after the boom, so I kind of thought of it as not a bad thing. Very silly I know but true.
