While We Wait: Part 3

What an intriguing idea.

dumb question

It might be interesting, but it removes much of the surprise value of the cloak and the sense of adventure that comes with exploring and seeing the darkness roll back as the turns proceed.

With such a plan, you would go from a small cradle with a cloak to a large one with a smaller cloak.

I'm a believer in small cradles through most of history. Rampant expansion of the cloak, as has been seen in LINES II and your own NES, is not at all how things should go. In my opinion, anyway...

Then you better explain in more detail exactly what you mean by: "a fast-forwarded fresh start on a cradle map"

...Into medieval times? I didn't think it was that hard to understand, though I suppose I could specify time period.

It would encourage more self-preservation.

"Ve have vays of enkouragink self-preservation."

I suppose only the most official factions in the stats, along with an overall loyalty which triggers rebellion at a low level?

Yes, that's about it. Come to think of it, it might make even more sense to replace it with general social groups (so as to include the commoners, possibly divided into urban and agrarian where that makes sense), and then give each an Influence and a Loyalty stat. That should provide for some nice political maneuvering; and a strong traditional aristocracy, combined with upkeep for a bureaucratic apparatus, should hinder our "total war mercantilist absolutists".

Why not, out of curiosity? Simply too unwieldy?

Unwieldy, player-consuming, and likely very chaotic as well (although if we have short turn lengths and relatively few PC nations, I suppose it might work out well enough for further experimentation; even then, I'm afraid that many people wouldn't invest as much effort into a nation they will lose to someone else eventually).

Not necessarily, though typically true.

I suppose that depends on one's measure of success, though I could see how a low-player NES can still be successful given the right setting and/or ruleset. Note, ofcourse, that I do not necessarily equate successful with good.

What would people think of a fast-forwarded fresh start on a cradle map?

It sounds like a nice idea, but I'm not sure if I will be able to join it.

Factions within those social groups might need to be represented as well, though I suppose that could get very long at a certain point.

The latter was one of my main concerns, as well. It may also encourage them to work harder, in that they only have a few turns to complete their goals -- this is debatable, however.

Nor do I, and that's why I think a low-player NES could well be good without being successful, if you know what I mean.

I was only testing the waters; for other reasons, it now looks unlikely I'll do it. In any case, whatever NES I'm going to start will probably start in May at the earliest.

Remember, kids, never click post before you've responded to the entire quote. :p

The greater factions (like scholar-officials and eunuchs) probably should be; the lesser alliances between and within are too ephemeral for our purposes.

Well, with some luck it should make them more careful, and generally closer to OTL rulers in their mindset.

Nor do I, and that's why I think a low-player NES could well be good without being successful, if you know what I mean.

I know all too many examples.

Of these social groups.. have them player controlled?

Um, no. That would be absolutely ridiculous, given that all of those groups are very specifically wide and fairly disunited even when they are roughly organised. A player could, however, rise from those ranks and/or lead some of the factions within those groups in a coup d'etat attempt or uprising.

Basically, you can't play as the traditional aristocracy of Assyria, but you still can try and lead a conspiracy of members of the old nobility to overthrow the king, possibly trying to win over the commoners as well along the way.

What would people think of a fast-forwarded fresh start on a cradle map?
You know I'll join. Just make sure to give us at least 2 updates before killing it. :p

I'm actually currently thinking a modernish fresh start would be rather fun.

Modernish cradle fresh start a la Alpha Centauri and Global Nexus' NES (good times, good times...)? ;)
