While We Wait....

I've got a question :
I'm looking for a FREE image editing program that can work layers.
Anyone know a good and easy one ?

What I want to do is move units on a map (if you haven't guessed) without having to manually cut/paste all the stuff, which messes the map underneath.
 
Yeah I've been experimenting (with not much success) using that for diplomacy 4. I'm using Paint (vista version) atm lol. It causes some problems and is seriously annoying but at least its simplistic enough for me to be able to make the most out of it. GIMP looks good but I seriously need more practise. I'll probably stick with paint for the remainder of the game, although I do have another diplomacy style game of my own invention planned for some time later this year ;).

There's still many things I have to do for the game I have in mind (a slightly more complex Diplo), but having a nice map that I can manage by myself will be a great incentive to keep on working on the rules.
 
I want to start a D&D play-by-post game... Where should I recruit people, etc?
 
Forum split?

If that's still an issue, maybe they could only receive PM's until the requirement has been met making PM spam impossible.

Anyway, that's my suggestion for dealing with the problem. Is it remotely possible?

Why do you care, Abaddon? You don't play in any of these games.

I'm still not entirely convinced that a postcount-nonpostcount forum split would really solve anything. The reason some of us want this to happen is to make it easy for new users to play games here, right? That is the real reason, not 'ohhh I hate that my precious Diplomacy game is in the same forum as all these spammy threads wah wah wah'.

Postcounting a forum would mean that all new players would have one post - the signup post. What are they supposed to do with the other four (unless they sign up for more than one game at a time - an unrealistic expectation for first-time players)? The same as they do now - post in the 'Welcome, new members' thread in Civ IV Gen Disc, then reply to a few things in Off-Topic or H&J or whatever. And there's still the five-day limit preventing them from receiving PMs immediately.

As a solution to this particular problem, this idea fails. Are there any other benefits to a forum split? (Assuming no other side effects like placement on the main forum index, which would obviously benefit Forum Games but is sadly a forlorn hope.)
 
Well for me I think the quality of forum games should be encouraged. An that can be done by rewarding it with its own forum.

This postcount stuff is just a useful launchpad for my own desires ;)

Also I don't like postcount spam anyway. Also if my postcount is lower it means I won't have to change my avatar as much cause I'd planned set changes at stuff like 2000/3000/5000

Forum Games is non-postcount in order to keep people like you out. ;)

That said, maybe adding postcount would solve some of the inactivity problems some games have been having lately.
 
Here's the main pro I see - the next time there's a database dump, maybe our stuff gets saved as opposed to going out with the rest of the garbage. The other pro, and it's a small one, is it cleans up this forum significantly. Right now it's a cluster@%#$ of posts with no organization. Six months ago it wasn't too bad, but now there's so many spam posts the 'good' threads get buried quite quickly. I'm really surprised this is getting as much flak as it is - the Mods in general have always made it clear that keeping the forums tidy was high on their to-do list, which accounts for all of the sub-forums that litter civfanatics. Give NOTW, Mafia, Lazy-NES, Diplomacy, and DYOS their own sub-forum, and the quality games have a chance to 1) be saved permanently, and 2) will stand out more and have a better chance of attracting and keeping serious players.
 
Maybe we could just move into the ''All other games'' section and leave forum games? (a possible compromise?) Really the ideal situation would be to simply get our own forum totally separate of CFC and appoint our own mods. It's a shame that the community isn't really large enough to make such a forum work, and for many people who post in other sections, CFC is convenient whereas a new forum just wouldn't be.

What exactly are the moderator's arguments against this other then because they think our games are spam?

Alright, conceded. But I got the impression, from the posts made at the time, that the database dump was a pretty irregular occurrence. The regular database ran out of space so they had to delete some stuff to allow people back on, and then they moved onto a bigger database, was that how it worked? (I am not good at computer.) It sounds like they've taken steps to ensure that that won't be happening again. (Remember, it wasn't just Forum Games that was affected - while the problems were going on, original posts were disappearing all over the place and most people were unable to post at all. It is in the mods' interest to prevent that problem from coming back.)

I dunno man, I just don't see it. :dunno: Even if every 'spam' thread on this forum was posted in right now, all the NotWs and DYOS stuff and all that wouldn't even come close to dropping off the first page, and that's probably all we should be concerned about.

The contrast between the more serious catalogued games and the 'spam' games is one of the highlights of the subforum IMO. Something for everyone.

They wouldn't stand out more if you had to do more clicking to get there, as Snerk said.

If there is a forum split then EPYC needs to come too. That game is entirely PM-based. Not sure what would be done about RtD; that's kinda spammy but in a structured way, with a goal.

A STORY FROM THE PAST

Back when I was just a lurker, or maybe even before then, there was no Forum Games section. All the games the CFCers wanted to play - Mafia, Survivor, the quizzes - were held in All Other Games. Those little guys could frolic to their hearts' content, playing games in a postcount forum.

But it was not all sunshine and rainbows, boys and girls. Mean old Uncle Moderator didn't want mafia games and the like counting towards their postcount, because golly gosh, they were spammy! (Not mod bias BTW, a number of them, like Chieftess, participated in mafia games at the time.) So after every game finished, Uncle Moderator would delete the whole thread, removing it from existence - what a wicked old man! Boo! Say 'boo', children.

The little CFCers didn't like this, because it meant that their postcount kept going up and down - some poor souls might reach an important postcount milestone, only to see their achievement taken away from them straight afterwards! So Uncle Moderator, who was briefly a kindly man due to whiskey, gave them their own forum, called 'Forum Games', where there was no postcount! And everybody was happy, for ever and ever and ever. And ever.
