You can name some of them, and later on i would like there to be some discussion if possible (if people participate and we find some common names and so on :) ).

So i will start:

-Kafka
-De Maupassant
-Gogol
-Lovecraft
-Borges

Of the above i spent most time on reading Kafka's work, but i am quite familiar with De Maupassant's and Borges' as well. Although i regard Gogol as one of the best writers of all time i have not really read a lot of his works (cause he has a number of novels as well). His short stories "Diary of a Madman" and "The Overcoat" are amazing, and the Diary of a Madman is perhaps the most tragically ending story i have ever read.

Other writers i like considerably:
Poe, Tanizaki, Nerval, Henry James, and of the locals i am mostly in favor of Alexander Papadiamantis, who wrote in the mid 19th century and remains the best novelist of the modern era (1821-) of this country. I am very interested in ancient Greek writers too, but have only read a few up to now :/

Well it usually doesn't count as non-fiction.

A few personal all-time favourites:

Iain Banks
Umberto Eco
Charles Stross

Is there any short story by Eco which you would suggest people should read? (i know of his massive novels, and some semiotics articles and so on, but any short story?) I haven't read any complete piece by him, btw. :)

Jasper Fforde is my current fav.

Uh... I guess Tolkien was the last guy I considered a favorite. Haven't read much fiction in years.
