I recently started playing FFH again, and I've been quite addicted for the last few months. So I was wondering, now that the project has reached maturity for quite a time and that civ5 has come out, are people still playing it?

Also: which modmod is currently the best regarding, added content, completness and balanced gameplay?

Now that I master most of vanilla FFH I want to try out a modmod but the sea of info is so huge that I thought asking for people's opinion would be easier.

Thanks!

Given the flop that many people seem to think Civ5 is, I wouldn't be surprised to find a great many people still play 4 and FFH, if not mods and modmods.

I haven't played bog-standard FFH for a while now, but the modmods... that's another story. I go between Orbis for stability and RifE for content. I'd include wildmana and/or Master of Mana, but I don't like Master of Mana, and no one seems to be able to get Wildmana.

But it's pretty much all up to what you like. Tholal's more naval AI is a good next step, gives a better challenge, but lacks one or two fixes FFH patch 'o' has (IIRC).
Orbis, as said, is widely regarded to be stable, but development seems to have hit a roadblock.
RifE on the other hand isn't always stable, but with it's abilty to manage modules to add and remove content on a whim, there's no denying it's flexibility, or just how much it can do.

Best bet is to check them all out, give them all a go. There are some who no doubt think I'm insane for not liking Master of Mana, and there are those who'll back the others just as much, but ultimately it comes down to what you want to play, and you're the best judge of that.

(And I say RifE over the others personally)

I'm not certian exactly which version. It's not exactly up to date, but both Orbis and RifE at least appear to incorporate most (all?) of Fall Further, so if it's FF you're after, again, give those two a go.

Yes. FF is also not developing for a quitte huge amount of time.
RifE is descendant of Fall Further - it was first called FF plus.
Orbis is stable and 'polished'. It is basicaly a finished piece of work, not 'work in progress' - with all good and bad consequences. The main disadvantage of Orbis, IMO, is weak AI. But, if you like economical aspects of the game, you should try Orbis. I love it!
MoM and Wildmana ads a lot, both to the AI and to the game mechanics. MoM is, in fact, totaly diffrent game than FfH.
I have not played RifE for a long time. IMO it is a little too chaotic - many new content, but unpolished, without leading theme

I'll grant, RifE does have a lot of new content, which is the source of it's periodic instabilities. It's an active work in progress though, and polishing seems to be done either along the way, through feedback, or in the form or modules - which are up to their respective maintainers to handle, whether official or 3rd party modules.

At the time of this post, I'm the first voter who said "A single game from time to time." I have been a World of Warcraft addict before, during and after FfH2's development, but I have always loved Civ (all versions) and FfH2. Nevertheless, nowadays I spend more time on the forums that I do actually playing the game. And I ONLY play FfH2 now, when I play, even though I have Civ V. And maybe it's because I play it less frequently than others here, but the only modmod I use is Tholal's More Naval AI, and I'm still not bored with the core game's content or frustrated with its remaining flaws.

Tholal, I'm not sure. I just vaguely remember there being something about being able to get Acheron's Son of the Inferno units when you're not meant to or something. I had a suspicion I was wrong, since I haven't actually looked much into your modmod while RifE still has hooks sunk into me.

I am a kind of guy, who wants to hear: that is the final version, there will not be anything new, maybe only minor patches - THEN I want to play.
Even playing 'vanilla' FfH was a pain for me when different phases came - ;fire', 'ice'...
I do not like upgrades breaking savegames, little errors resulting from rushing, etc.
But of course those are just my preferences.

You won't hear that for some time from RifE, though we do have long periods between major versions which are fairly stable.

I'm the complete opposite, btw.

So, would it be taking it too far to assume, that your mod is somewhat like you?
:)
(or, at least, it is built according to your preferences - which is obvious, good and natural)

EDIT: after your declaration, I can assume that I will not be a big fan of RifE for a quite time... I love some things in your mod, but as I said - cannot stand constant changes.

To answer the original post, I play both Master of Mana and Rise from Erebus on a regular basis still. I rotate between them (currently I'm playing RifE and was playing Master of Mana a week or so ago) because they both tickle different fancies.

Well, there aren't constant changes; But there will be absolutely massive changes in 1.4 (new tech tree, new civics, new unitcombats, new promotion structure, new building structure, on and on). So large changes, yes.

After that, our plans are most just polish, and new civs.

Nice to hear that! One new thing that I always appreciate is adding new civs :goodjob:

I think I will try this 1.4. version. Any eta clues?

None whatsoever. I've been extremely active in adding the base mechanics we need (vastly improved affinities, for example), but the majority of changes are still in the design phase; It will be a complete restructure of all units/buildings/promotions/civics/techs/so on, so our process is essentially to start with the core assets, and then work on the civs one by one. The core is designed, but we haven't touched civs and won't until we can actually begin implementing.

Yea, as for released active modmods, your best bet is RIFE (although honestly I probably won't go back into rife until 1.4 is released)

I also make my own modmods

FF is still my favorite, and what I play most of the time. I like RiFE, but I love FF!
