Russell had lots of affairs, but I have never heard that he did so with his son's wife. He was also quite happy for his own wife to have affairs, because he had a pretty liberated view of such matters. So I'm not convinced that that's relevant. I don't know which writings you think are pompous; I'd say they're just written in an early twentieth-century style, which you'll find in most English-language philosophy of the time. Just try reading Broad.

I never thought of Buchanan as a pompous jerk. Just incompetent, and perhaps traitorous by being unwilling to step in and prevent secession/dissolution of the Republic he had sworn to upkeep. Quite possibly the only President worse than the current incumbent.

And Ol Hickory? Come on, are you serious? Pompous is one of the last words that would occur to me. Do you have some political axe to grind or something? (if you are descendant of Cherokee, for example, you get a free pass to make your claim).
