Why a 1,000 character VM limit?

Especially with the 30 seconds between VMs. I mean, I know people could spam, but if they do, why not just infract them? Sometimes you need to post more than 1,000 characters in a legitimate VM. Is there any real point in not allowing it to be higher? Or is it just a default thing.

It's probably the default setting. Although, I think VM's are meant for exchanges on the brief side of things and longer messages should probably go into PMs.

That is true, but still.

Sometimes a discussion starts into VM. When the discussion gets really long (Like if I have to post three or more times to get my message across) I usually move to PM, but its really annoying when you go about a hundred characters over and have to wait 30 extra seconds, and make a second post, AND find a sensible way to break up the post, just to post it.

I think this should be changed. 2,000 would probably be enough. I think I've only ever typed a VM that was more than that once. But I see no real reason for a limit anyway.

Sometimes people will post a message which is short enough to fit into a VM, but your reply is not. In which case you CAN reply by PM but then it looks like you ignore people. :(

:p

Well, just look at some of the stuff that's written on it. Some messages take more than 1K characters...

Remember, 1K is, on average, about 200 words, if that much. Not as much as it seems like.

How does it harm you if we use them for debate?

Seriously, quit arguing with me. I'd like an answer from the moderation staff, or someone who has knowledge, or at least new insight, on this subject.

It doesn't harm me, but that's irrelevant. If you try to use VMs for a debate, you'll be sorely disappointed. It's like trying to use a spoon as a knife. You might be able to do it, but you'll be severely handicapped trying to do it.

I think Moss' point still holds. VMs are designed as a social tool as opposed to a discussion tool. The reason for a limit would be to keep it as such. Or alternatively, to make sure your wall doesn't get clogged. If the ten messages on each page were 30k, it'd be far more annoying to view. So there has to be a limit somewhere from that point of view. It's not as low as 140 characters, but it is at 1k rather than, say, 5k, which reflects the more social and relaxed nature the featured is designed for.

That does make sense. But, don't even PMs have a limit of 15 K or so? Even still, that wouldn't be necessary. As I said, I rarely feel the need for more than 2K, and I don't see what possible harm making it 2K would cause.

I don't know what you're talking about.

I've run into the character limit for PMs several times talking with Domination3000

1000 character is already something like the equivalent of 7 tweets. I can't imagine having the attention span required to

edit: something about VMs being designed for quick exchanges, I think
