Why Choose Religions?

In BtS, you choose the religion you found. Why? That takes not only all the fun, but all the historical boundaries as well. They wanted you to found Buddhism, Hinduism, or Judaism earlier because they were founded earlier. They manipulated the technologies thus. Now, you choose the religion you found, so you can found Islam (founded 620 AD) before Hinduism (founded 3000 BC)! It makes no sense.....

It's an option that probably comes from the fact that often, Islan and Taoism play little purpose in the game. By the time they are founded, Buddhism or Hinduism is usually dominating the world. I'd imagine you will only be able to use this option in a custom game.

Since its hard to make a map as diverse as Earth where religions don't spread so fast, usually Hinduism, Buddhism, and to a lesser extent Judaism and Confucianism rule the map.

its also for people who want to get a certain religion but find it hard getting it.

for example, because i am Buddhist, i prefer to found Buddhism. but, of course, a lot of people rush for Buddhism in the beginning... this option, i think, will help me get Budhdism.

but, wait, a question - if the option is on, will the AI found a random religion, or the technologically appropriate one?

I think that the AI will try to found the most historically accurate religion (e.g. the Arabs will found Islam and the Spanish will found Christianity). For civs hisotrically with religons not in the game (e.g. the Mayans), a random religion will be founded.

Hopefully it will do the smart thing. Check which resources it has, and found a religion that has Cathedral-level buildings who get a bonus for that resource.

(ie: if it has copper, found Buddhism, Taoism, or Confucianism; if it has stone, found Christianity or Judaism; if it has marble, found Islam or Hinduism)

It feels a little weird for Confucian Arabia to go to war with Jewish Incas.

I think it's a great addition that even further distances them from favouring a specific religion.

However, I would have preferred to have the religions be the same way they are now, but to drastically increase the proliferation of later religions like Islam (and even break the religion-existing boundary).

There are at least a few religions that claim to be the eternal truth and the others corrupted versions: the Judaism-Christianity-Islam triangle at least.

Each one will say that their religion as it stands was the one God originally had in mind and that the others are corrupted apostate versions.

From that point of view, Being able to choose which religion comes where is kind of fun. Who says that I can't get Christianity out of Polytheism? :)

Is this in the game?
WHAT?!
I discover polytheism and then...choose if I want islam or hinduism? What?
Can someone give me an url to the page where this was said :/

Echoing many others: IT IS OPTIONAL

Also, you have to keep in mind that Civ is not a total historical simulation, it's a game.

Actually, I find it pretty unrealistic how Islam is never, ever a powerful religion in games. Same thing, to a lesser degree, with Christianity.

to answer the title

IM SICK TO DEATH OF 2 TURNS INTO A GAME AND ALWAYS FOUNDING JUDAISM AND BUDDHISM!!!!

Makes the game feel so, SO linear, with everything figured out before i even get to it.

*shakes fist violently*

yeah I'm kind of sick of Jewish/Bhuddist/Hindu dominating every game, usually the last two. The other ones always get the short end of the stick.

I like ot found Taoisim, but it comes very late and with an expensive technology, this should balance things otu a bit, especially if civs choose their historical religions Romans: Christian Arabs: Islam India: Hindu etc...

Something not mentioned: now when "Buddhism has been found in a distant land" you won't immediately know that someone has researched Meditation.

Yeah, I think this is a great idea. Hinduism, Buddhism, and Judaism are always dominant. One game I decided to spread Islam and to make it the dominant faith. I became Muslim and my neighbor did, but I never got anyone else to convert, really annoying.

The religion part is severely broke in the current Civ build.

If this fixes it I will be eturnally grateful. I don't care if the solution is elegant, I just care if it works!
