Why did my friends declare war?

Hi,
I have just started playing FfHII and I love it, but at turn 575 every other civ on the map declared war on me: including the ones I had defensive pacts with and whose relations with me were 'pleased'. Now they are all fighting me and refusing to talk and I can't figure out from the diplomacy text why - they are still pleased with me except 'this war spoils our relations'. Well, they declared war! And they won't let me make peace!

My armagedon counter was only at 7.

Is there a fixed time world war?

Have you started the Tower of Mastery?

Oooh, yeah! Beat ya by 1 minute! Take that, TheBoatman!

My question about this is will the AI declare war on another AI civ that starts the ToM?

I don't think I've ever seen an AI civ start the ToM (or any other tower for that matter).

Wasn't there some fix a time ago that was supposed to prevent 'piling on' by AI civs?

If so, I don't think it is working as in my last game I was the only Good civ and had 7 of 9 AI civs declare war on me. Not the same turn, however.

Prevent? Dog-piling should actually be more common, now, especially with a high Armageddon counter.

I think that starting the last level of the Altar of Luonnotar would have this effect too.

As a player you start to get the warning that someone is about to finish the Altar when he has 2 parts left. IIRC.

And when I started building the ToM I didn't get any additional war declarations, but then I was at war with all the good civs already, and all the Evil civs were my friend, except Sheaim that was the leaves and hated my religion. But they didn't declare war on me.

Hyborem DID however declare war on me, the turn I completed ToM.

If you are making the ToM every civ in the game that isn't already in a war should declare war on you (within reason, they have to have contact with, not be on your team, etc).

So if you want to sneak a ToM through, make sure everyone else is fighting someone first.

Aha! That might be the reason the evil civs weren't declaring war on me.

Hyborem and Sheaim was in a war, and Keelyn was fighting Cardith. While I was already fighting Cardith and Elohim.

that makes the tom seem kinda neutral/evil aligned:satan:
(bribery for victory!)

If civ who has Def. Pact with you perform a turn immediately after you, it declares war on you (when you starts TOM), otherwise on the first your attacker. So the sequence of turns becomes important strategical information.
